As a longtime manga enthusiast, I must say this year has been quite a rollercoaster for us fans! We’ve seen some of our all-time favorites come to an end, leaving behind a mix of emotions that only a fellow manga lover can truly understand.

Over the past couple of years, it’s been all about shonen manga for me! These series, known for their vibrant energy and engaging narratives, have taken over the manga world. Most notably, they grace the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump, but you’ll also find some gems published on a monthly basis.

Over time, manga series have been growing shorter, which means more stories come to an end annually. In 2024, several significant manga concluded, leaving a noticeable void in the industry. Here’s a list of the most notable mangas that wrapped up last year.

4. Cipher Academy

Release Date November 21, 2022
Last Chapter Date February 5, 2024
Number of Volumes 7

The “Cipher Academy” is a Shonen manga published weekly in Shonen Jump. It ran for approximately a year and a half before wrapping up in early 2024, with a total of 7 volumes released. This series was penned by Nisio Isin and illustrated by Yuji Iwakasi. The narrative centers around the protagonist, Iroha Irohazaka, who attends Cipher Academy, previously an exclusive all-girls military school.

The manga wasn’t concluded by its author; instead, it was canceled (or “axed”) by Shonen Jump. This happens frequently with mangas that aren’t performing well. Despite being intriguing and showing promise, the story didn’t get a chance to fully develop.

3. Noragami: Stray God

For many years, the anime and manga titled “Noragami: Stray God” was extremely popular. This series came to an end in January 2024, and in total, it produced 27 main volumes (not counting extras). The manga’s journey began in 2010, making it a long-running manga series.

Readers found themselves deeply disappointed with the conclusion of the story in Noragami, for a number of reasons. The primary complaint was that it seemed hurriedly concluded, a result of the authors attempting to quickly tie up loose ends. However, due to health complications, the authors had to take an extended break from working on the manga, which ultimately led to its demise.

For enthusiasts of Noragami, this conclusion might be unfortunate, but they can at least harbor hope that a third season of Noragami may materialize in the future. The anime has been absent since Season 2, which corresponds to the prolonged hiatus the manga experienced.

2. Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen stands as one of the top two most impactful shonen manga that concluded in the year 2024. This phenomenal series has been making waves among anime enthusiasts since its initial debut, with its first season causing quite a stir. Many viewers found themselves enthralled by its engaging storyline and captivating characters, while the intense battles kept fans on their toes. The manga commenced in 2018 and wrapped up six years later in 2024, marking a substantial run for this popular series.

The manga JJK concluded with Sukuna’s defeat, but many readers found the ending unsatisfying due to its hurried pace. Key plot points, like the merger, were abruptly abandoned by the author Gege, leaving fans feeling let down. However, there is some consolation: a final volume with an epilogue, a new anime season and movie are all scheduled for release in the near future. Additionally, fans eagerly anticipate potential sequels to further explore this universe in the long term.

1. My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia is a manga that’s hard to forget once you’ve read it, and it has left a lasting impact on the global manga scene over the past decade. It gained immense popularity since its debut in 2014, standing tall alongside other successful Shonen Jump series like Jujutsu Kaisen, which also made a significant splash. The series ran for an impressive ten years, offering fans an unforgettable storyline and characters that will be remembered for a long time.

The final fight took place between Deku and Shigaraki and was one that will be remembered for years, especially once it gets animated in the final season of the series. Not all fans were happy with the ending, especially as it didn’t progress Deku and Ochaco’s relationship, but an epilogue in the final volume expanded upon it a bit further, and pretty much made official the couple of Deku and Ochaco. The epilogue also tied other loose ends the story had when it ended. While MHA has ended, fans can still expect some MHA content, specifically some spinoffs and the Vigilantes anime coming next year.

Horikoshi has crafted a heartwarming series that is sure to leave a lasting impression on upcoming Shonen Jump publications following its conclusion. With My Hero Academia wrapping up, Shonen Jump faces a significant void, particularly with other prominent series like JJK nearing their end too.
