As a gamer, I’ve noticed how expensive things have gotten! Everyone’s looking for ways to enjoy great games without having to spend a fortune, which is totally understandable. But it’s frustrating because a lot of the free games out there either try to get you to spend money on little things inside the game, or they’re only fun if you play with other people.

If you’re looking for a great single-player video game and don’t want to spend any money, you might think your options are limited. But don’t worry – there are actually some fantastic free games available, you just need to know where to find them. Here are some completely free single-player games that are definitely worth playing.

Yume Nikki

One Of The Most Important Indie Games Ever Made

In the early 2000s, Japanese developer Kikiyama created Yume Nikki, one of the first independent video games. Though made using RPG Maker 2003 – a fact you can easily see in its visuals – it doesn’t play like a typical role-playing game. It’s more of an adventure game viewed from an angled perspective, with some scary moments.

I first played *Yume Nikki* a while back, and it’s seriously unlike anything else. You play as this girl, Madotsuki, and basically explore her dreams, which get super weird, trippy, and honestly, a little creepy fast. It’s one of those games that really stuck with me, and I can definitely see how it influenced a lot of other cool indie RPGs like *Undertale* and *Omori*. The best part? It’s always been totally free to play, but now it’s also on Steam, so it’s easier than ever to jump in and experience it for yourself.

Doki Doki Literature Club!

A Brilliant Visual Novel With A Mind-Blowing Twist

Even if you don’t usually play visual novels, *Doki Doki Literature Club!* is a truly unique game everyone should try. Developed over two years by Dan Salvato, this indie title quickly became a viral sensation when it launched and continues to be popular and talked about today.

It’s hard to talk about what makes this game so good without revealing its surprising twists, which are hidden beneath its charming appearance. If you’re curious, it’s best to experience it yourself before learning any spoilers. Also, there’s an expanded version called *Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!* with extra content, but the original 2017 game is free to play.

Deltarune (Chapters 1 & 2)

Undertale’s Excellent Spiritual Successor

Most gamers know Toby Fox, the creator of the popular game *Undertale*. In 2019, he surprised fans by unexpectedly releasing a new game called Deltarune, and it was completely free to play. But players who finished the first part soon learned that this was only Chapter 1, and the game was still in development.

Toby Fox followed up with *Deltarune* Chapter 2 in 2021, also available for free. He recently released Chapters 3 and 4 in June 2025, and these are the first parts of the game that players have to pay for. Luckily, the first two chapters remain completely free, which is fantastic news for fans! *Deltarune* is one of the best indie RPGs available right now, boasting a captivating story, memorable characters, clever gameplay that playfully references classic RPGs, and an incredibly catchy soundtrack. It’s a game well worth paying for, but the fact that the first two chapters are free makes it even more appealing.

Astro’s Playroom

The Best Pack-In Game Of This Generation

It’s rare for new game consoles to include a free game these days, so Sony surprised a lot of people when the PlayStation 5 launched in 2020 with a pre-installed game. That game, *Astro’s Playroom*, isn’t just a short demonstration-though it does showcase the PS5 and its DualSense controller-it’s a complete game with several hours of gameplay.

Astro’s Playroom is a vibrant and easy-to-play 3D platformer where you control Astro as he explores the inside of the PS5 console across four different levels, collecting items along the way. It’s a clear tribute to the PlayStation brand, made with a lot of passion, but surprisingly, many PS5 owners don’t even know it’s available! The game is so good, it actually got a sequel called Astro Bot, which was named Game of the Year in 2024.

Helltaker

A Fun Puzzle-Adventure Game About Sharply Dressed Demon Girls

Okay, so Helltaker is… different. At first glance, it looks like a dating sim, but trust me, it’s way more than that. It’s seriously fun, really original, and just plain creative. One person, Łukasz Piskorz, made this whole game and dropped it for free back in 2020, and it blew up! Basically, you solve these clever puzzles to get to a cute demon girl at the end of each level. It’s a surprisingly addictive little game.

Helltaker became popular quickly, thanks to its fun gameplay, appealing characters, and impressive 2D animation. Following that success, its creator, Piskorz, released another free game called Awaria, which is also worth playing.

Sheepy: A Short Adventure

A Beautiful But Ominous Pixel Platformer

If you’re a gamer searching for a visually appealing and unique experience without wanting to spend any money, Sheepy: A Short Adventure is worth checking out. This indie 2D platformer was created by a small team, and it immediately stands out thanks to its excellent graphics and overall presentation.

Sheepy: A Short Adventure is visually impressive, featuring beautifully detailed characters and backgrounds – especially considering it’s a free game. The game also has a unique, slightly sad atmosphere, a surprisingly good soundtrack, and simple but engaging gameplay that makes its short playtime enjoyable.

The Murder Of Sonic The Hedgehog

This Hilarious April Fools’ Gag Is Perfect For Any Sonic Fan

Sega released a free game called *The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog* on April 1st, 2023. Though it started as an April Fools’ joke, the game was surprisingly well-made with a lot of attention to detail. It’s a genuinely good game that Sonic fans, and really anyone, should check out.

In *The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog*, you play as a train employee on the Mirage Express, where the Sonic crew is throwing Amy Rose a birthday party. But the celebration turns into an investigation when Sonic is found murdered! This game is a funny, old-school point-and-click adventure that parodies classic murder mysteries. It features clever writing, a great sense of humor, enjoyable mini-games, and tons of references that *Sonic* fans will appreciate.

Grimhook

A Fast-Paced Action Game With A Satisfying Grappling Hook Mechanic

  • Released: December 8, 2023
  • Developer: Unlimited Fries
  • System: PC
  • Genre: First-person, Action

While many free games are simple 2D RPGs, platformers, or visual novels, Unlimited Fries’ *Grimhook* offers a more impressive experience with its 3D graphics. It’s a fast-paced, first-person action game where you use a grappling hook to move around and fight enemies.

Grimhook really shines with its smooth and quick movement, making exploring the game world a lot of fun. The gorgeous, hand-painted art and creepy Lovecraftian themes add even more to the experience. It’s surprisingly impressive for a free game, and it feels amazing to play such a well-made game without spending any money.
