Best Sports Game of 2024—Best New Sports Games This Year

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I have to say that 2024 has been quite the year for sports games. From EA FC 25 to WWE 2K24, it’s clear that the genre is thriving and constantly evolving.

I remember back in my day when we were still playing PES on PlayStation 1, and the idea of a next-gen soccer game seemed like science fiction. Fast forward to today, and I’m sitting here marveling at the graphics and realism of EA FC 25. The new FC IQ tactical system is nothing short of revolutionary, and I can’t get enough of Rush mode.

However, it’s not all rosy in the sports game world. WWE 2K24, despite its improvements, still falls short of its potential with a lackluster Showcase Mode and technical issues. And let’s not forget about EA Sports College Football 25, a long-awaited return to a beloved franchise that shows promise but could use some more depth in its game modes.

All in all, I have to give it to EA FC 25 as the Game of the Year in the sports genre for 2024. But don’t get me started on TopSpin 2K25 – after a 13-year hiatus, it’s back and better than ever! I just wish they could work out the animations so that I don’t feel like I’m playing against a broken record.

Oh, and if you ask me what I think of these sports games compared to the real thing? Let’s just say that my couch cushions are much more forgiving than a real-life tackle or a racket to the face!

As a lifelong gamer with a passion for sports games, I must say that 2024 was an incredible year for the genre. The Sports genre consistently delivers new entries every year, but 2024 saw not only the continuation of these series but also the emergence of fresh sports IPs and the revival of legendary franchises.

One game that stood out from the crowd was our Best Sports Game of 2024 winner. This game captured the essence of sports gaming in a way that few others have managed to do, offering an immersive and engaging experience for players like myself. I spent countless hours playing this game, competing against friends online and honing my skills offline. The game’s graphics were stunning, the controls were intuitive, and the sound design was top-notch.

I was thrilled to see so many other games nominated in the same category. Each of them brought something unique to the table, showcasing the creativity and innovation that drives the sports gaming industry forward. From simulating the excitement of a high-speed car race to capturing the tension of a basketball game, these nominees demonstrated the wide range of experiences that can be found within the Sports genre.

Overall, 2024 was an unforgettable year for sports games, and I eagerly await what the future holds. The innovation and creativity in this industry never cease to amaze me, and I look forward to seeing what developers will come up with next.

Sports games, being a consistently thriving genre, will continue to persist due to the vast array of sports and their simulated versions. Year after year, we can expect numerous new releases because of this rich diversity. Given that most sports have annual seasons, it’s only natural to see frequent updates or new editions. Examples of popular franchises in this area include EA Sports FC, NBA 2K, Madden, and many more.

The year 2024 was filled with these names, and the game that took home our “Best Sports Game of 2024” award was a clear frontrunner.

Best Sports Title of 2024 Winner — EA FC 25

It’s telling that EA FC 25, the newest entry in EA’s soccer simulation series, wins our Best Sports Game of 2024 award. Don’t get me wrong; I’ve invested quite a bit of time into it, and it’s not terrible by any stretch. However, its lack of fresh ideas reflects a pattern within the sports game genre that seems to value repetition over creativity.

As a seasoned gamer with years of FIFA under my belt, I must say that EA FC 25 has truly outdone itself this time around. The new FC IQ tactical system in the 2024 iteration is nothing short of revolutionary – it’s like they’ve read my mind! It gives me the freedom to mold my team and adapt to my ever-changing squad of players, which is a game-changer for someone like me who values strategy and flexibility. The difference it makes to my gameplay is immense, and I can’t help but feel that EA has finally cracked the code on creating a truly immersive football gaming experience. Bravo, EA – you’ve earned a place in my heart (and my gaming rotation) with this latest addition to the long-running series.

Additionally, Rush is a fresh 5v5 game mode that has replaced Volta’s sparsely populated area. These contests are characterized by swift action, shorter duration, smaller playing fields, and the potential for high-scoring games. Lackadaisical teammates might diminish the experience, but it’s an excellent addition to the game and I hope EA expands on this feature.

In a simplified rephrase: EA Football Club 25 showcases minor adjustments throughout the game, while Pro Clubs has experienced its most significant updates in quite some time. The primary appeal of FC 25 lies in its excellent representation of soccer, which remains the world’s most popular sport. Yes, center-backs can seemingly keep pace with Mbappé effortlessly, referees are quick to issue cards, and certain shooting techniques can be manipulated—much like every new edition—but I’m always eager for another game.

It seems to me that other sporting titles aren’t doing enough to establish their presence strongly. For instance, eFootball used to be a powerhouse like Pro Evolution Soccer but has diminished significantly, while UFL is the newcomer aiming to carve out its niche. I’m hoping for a sports game – either an established one or a fresh contender – that will breathe life into 2025 and compete with EA FC’s dominance.

Best Sports Games of 2024 Nominations

As a die-hard football game enthusiast, let me clarify that EA Sports FIFA 25 hasn’t dominated the scene by an overwhelming margin – don’t misunderstand this. Other sports titles have certainly made their presence felt in the competition. From sequels that refine and enhance the gaming experience to the return of legendary series, here are the top competitors vying for the throne.

WWE 2K24

2K24 in the WWE series appears to be moving in a positive trajectory. After the misstep with 2K20, 2K22 served as a comeback, and 2K23 took things up a notch. In my opinion, 2K24 continues this trend of gradual improvement without being revolutionary. The game’s realism, presentation, and enhanced in-ring mechanics remain delightfully refined. However, the Showcase Mode for 40 Years of Wrestlemania falls flat, and technical issues persist. These ongoing problems need to be rectified if 2K24 is to contend for Game of the Year.

EA Sports College Football 25

In 2013, a legal dispute brought the cherished EA Sports College Football series to a halt faster than a running back colliding with a defensive lineman. After eleven years, EA Sports College Football 25 has finally arrived as a refreshing change for those seeking an alternative to EA’s yearly Madden series, often criticized for its monotony. This could be the beginning of something remarkable. The game captures the essence of college football for each team and showcases enhanced gameplay mechanics that Madden might find beneficial to emulate. However, the game modes aren’t particularly deep, giving the impression that EA was testing the waters with EA Sports College Football 25. A significantly improved sequel could certainly raise a flag on the field.

TopSpin 2K25

13 years have passed since I last owned TopSpin 4, released in 2011. I find it surprising that tennis games haven’t received much attention over the past years, considering the sport’s popularity. However, I’m pleased to see 2K is now actively involved in all sports genres, with PGA Tour 2K25 upcoming. Many of my previous feelings about the nominees apply here. TopSpin delivers an enjoyable gaming experience through its blend of powerful racket-hitting shots and realistic tennis matches. Yet, it could use some polish: The stadiums and licensed players look fantastic, but animations tend to repeat often, and more depth is needed in terms of content. Just like EA Sports College Football 25, I’m glad to see its return and hope for improvement next time!
