
Octopath Traveler 0 is a massive JRPG that can take over a hundred hours to complete. However, with so many options at the beginning of the game, players might find themselves a little lost when they first start playing.

Best Mastery Skills in Octopath Traveler 0
At the start of the game, players choose one of three starting skills. This choice subtly changes the story and how well-prepared characters are for choosing a job – whether that job focuses on dealing damage (DPS), providing support, or casting spells.
- Attack Skill – Twin Shot Mastery. Select a Weapon and deal damage to a foe 2 times. ‘You wanted to learn how to fight as a member of the watch. So your father, the watch captain, taught you how to strike down enemies.’
- Recovery Skill – Healing Prayer Mastery. Grant HP recovery to an ally and restore SP by 10%. ‘You wanted to learn how to heal the injured. So your mother, a former cleric, taught you how to ease the pain of others.’
- Enfeebling Skill – Weaken Foundation Mastery. Lowers Phys. Atk and Phys. Def of a foe for 2 turns. ‘You showed a great interest in architecture. So the local carpenter taught you about everything you needed to know about structures.’
When deciding which skills are best, keep in mind that Twin Shot Mastery and Healing Prayer Mastery are top-tier choices. Weaken Foundation Mastery, however, isn’t as strong and can be easily swapped out for a better skill early on.
Twin Shot Mastery is great for rapidly destroying enemy shields and stopping powerful attacks from bosses.
These skills aren’t tied to any specific character class, meaning anyone can learn them during the game. You usually unlock them by either becoming friends with characters you meet, or by defeating them in battle.
Best Favorite Dish in Octopath Traveler 0
Next, you’ll choose your character’s Favorite Dish. This choice gives a small initial boost and unlocks a special menu you can create at your base. Dishes made from this menu will give you slightly improved stats compared to standard meals. Remember, dishes are arranged from top left to bottom right, and you’ll need to give each one a name after selecting your favorite.

No matter what Favorite Dish a player chooses, everyone in the party will get its benefits when it’s eaten. A Favorite Dish is a recipe that’s immediately available as soon as you pick it from the menu.

To begin Octopath Traveler II, players will choose three starting items. These belongings will be carried throughout the adventure, so it’s important to consider their effects and how useful they are before making your selections.

Players generally benefit most from choosing the Letter Fragment, Crested Key, and Nourishing Nut, though the Embershroom Bed is also a solid pick. Other items are useful depending on how a player likes to play. These key items provide lasting advantages, such as unlocking additional characters and permanently increasing stats.
