Happy Thanksgiving! Though Thanksgiving Day itself only lasts for 24 hours, the festive spirit often extends throughout the week, especially with Black Friday right after – it’s become a big event almost like a holiday! If your family enjoys gaming, it’s always a good idea to have some fun group games on hand for when everyone’s together.
There are lots of games with cooperative play, but not many that let more than four people play together, or are really good for big groups. If you’re planning a game night with friends or just want to have fun with family, these new games should be a hit and provide plenty of entertainment.
Jackbox Party Pack
A Big Selection Of Party Games For A Big Group
- Number of Players: Varies depending on the game, but most of the recent packs prioritize large groups.
- Required Hardware: PC, consoles, or Amazon Luna, along with smartphones or tablets
- Why Jackbox Party Pack Is Great For More Than 4 Players: The series has produced so many minigames that there should be multiple options that suit every person. A single pack comes with 5 games, which tend to fall under different categories. You can also buy individual games (although not every game is available).
- Best Jackbox Game Series For Big Groups: Quiplash (3–8 Players); Fibbage (2–8 Players); Trivia Murder Party (1–8 Players); Drawful (3–8 Players)
When people think of party games, Mario Party often comes to mind, but it’s usually limited to four players. For larger groups, The Jackbox Party Pack is a better choice. You can buy a pack of games, subscribe to the Jackbox channel on Amazon Luna for full access, or purchase games individually – either way, you’re almost guaranteed a fun evening with lots of laughs, friendly competition, and maybe even a few fibs!
The most popular Jackbox games are usually a good choice, but it’s worth checking out a few to find the ones that best fit your group. For instance, Drawful might not be fun if no one likes to draw or share their artwork, but it could be a hit with a creative family.
Among Us
Find The Impostor In Your Thanksgiving Party
- Number of Players: 4–15
- Required Hardware: Either a console or a mobile device for each player. The mobile release is free, but the console/PC versions are paid. Among Us supports full crossplay, too.
- Why Among Us Is Great For More Than 4 Players: While not as accessible to non-gamers as something like Jackbox, Among Us can be a more riveting time if the group wants something a touch more intensive and, potentially, hilarious. Also, the game is so popular that most players will already have experience with it.
Among Us is one of the most beloved multiplayer games ever made, and it stands out as a top-tier social deduction game. Its distinctive style comes from its science fiction theme, charming characters, and humorous animations. The gameplay remains consistent across different maps: players take on the role of Crewmates completing tasks, while hidden Impostors try to eliminate them. Crewmates win by identifying the Impostors, but they often accidentally vote out innocent players in the process.
Playing Among Us with people in the same room is incredibly fun, though it doesn’t necessarily create a lot of face-to-face conversation. Once a match starts, everyone stays busy until they’re voted out, and the game often leads to hilarious moments, debates, and plenty of betrayal!
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Say What You Are Thankful For, Then Pummel Your Family & Friends
- Number of Players: 2–8
- Required Hardware: A single Nintendo Switch will do the trick, but you will obviously need a Joy-Con for each player.
- Why Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Is Great For More Than 4 Players: It is Super Smash Bros. Seriously, when have these games ever failed to entertain a party? Ultimate makes it very easy for (up to) 8 players to play together.
I usually steer clear of suggesting fighting games for family gatherings like Thanksgiving – it’s tough when some people know the moves and others don’t, and it can ruin the fun. But Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is different! It’s so easy to pick up and play, even if you’ve never touched a fighting game before. You don’t need to be an expert to have a blast!
While experience and skill are helpful, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate also celebrates unpredictable, chaotic gameplay. A new player might struggle at first, but they can still win with a bit of luck and quick button presses. Ultimately, the game is just fun and brings joy to everyone who plays it.
Mario Kart World Or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Local Wireless Or Just Cycle Through Players)
The Perfect Crowd-Pleaser For Any Gathering, Not Just Thanksgiving
- Number of Players: 2–8 through local wireless, with 2 players on each console. If you only have a single Switch (and 4 Joy-Cons), you can opt for 4-player matches and swap out after a race. LAN play is also supported in Mario Kart World.
- Required Hardware: A console for every duo, with Joy-Cons for each player. If you are a party of 8, you will need 4 Nintendo Switches (Or Switch 2 for Mario Kart World).
- Why Mario Kart Is Great For More Than 4 Players: Mario Kart might just be the best “pick-up-and-play” franchise of all time. The games have intuitive controls, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Kart World are near-perfect group games. I personally prefer the former, but the latter might be more accessible, depending on the group’s hardware. The Switch is such a portable console that it is somewhat likely that a group will have access to a couple.
Everyone loves Mario Kart, or at least enjoys it! Even if it’s not a favorite game series, most people have fun with a race now and then, especially when playing with friends and family. The competitive but relaxed atmosphere makes it a blast, and throwing in a battle mode just adds to the fun, letting players playfully compete against each other.
Setting up Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and World for larger groups (6-8 players) is a little trickier than Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as everyone needs to make sure they have the right equipment beforehand. Still, many people already own a Switch and these games, so getting a full group together shouldn’t be too difficult.
Other Multiplayer Games That Allow More Than 4 Players
Punch, Bomb, Or Dance Thanksgiving Away
Although those recommendations are our top choices, many other games could be a better fit depending on who you’re looking for. Here are a few more options to consider.
- Gang Beasts – A really fun physics-based PvP game that is sure to inspire laughter. Generally, the game supports 4-player local co-op, but online play allows up to 8 users to join in.
- Just Dance – Just good-old-fashioned rhythm fun, and the series is specifically suited for group fun, with 6 players trying to synchronize as they bust a move.
- Super Bomberman R 2 (Or Super Bomberman R) – Supports 8 players locally, and the gameplay is chaotic but also arcadey and intuitive.
