I’ve been a huge fan of The Simpsons since their first appearance on television back in 1989. They hold the record as the longest-running American scripted prime-time TV series. In the 90s, this beloved show really took off and captured the hearts of millions with its unique humor and relatable characters.
The Simpsons franchise expanded beyond television, giving rise to various spin-offs such as comics, figurines, a movie, and video games. Not all of these games were critically acclaimed, with some perceived as hurriedly produced cash grabs. However, there are a handful of titles that not only shine as Simpsons games but also stand tall as exceptional video games in their own right.
11 The Simpsons Wrestling
A Clunky But Fun Fighting Game
- Release Date: 2001
- Developers: Big Ape Productions
- Platform(s): PlayStation
- Genre: Sports
- Metacritic Rating: 32
In the 1990s and early 2000s, the fame of “The Simpsons” and WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) grew simultaneously. Thus, it seemed natural for the yellow family to enter the wrestling arena with “The Simpsons Wrestling.”
The experience of watching twenty Simpsons characters engage in fights with unique moves was entertaining. however, the game received harsh criticism from critics. They disapproved of the graphics and gameplay, labeling it as a simple button-mashing game. The audio track and authentic voice cast were commended, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a nostalgic Simpsons experience rather than a serious wrestling game.
10 Krusty’s Fun House
A Challenging Puzzle Game
- Release Date: 1992
- Developers: Audiogenic
- Platform(s): NES, SNES, Game Boy, Master System, Game Gear, Gensis, Amiga, MS-DOS
- Genre: Puzzle
In an innovative twist for “The Simpsons” game series, players assume the role of Krusty the Clown in “Krusty’s Fun House.” This title marks a departure from the family-centric games that came before it, offering instead a captivating puzzle-based adventure.
As a dedicated gamer, I can tell you that back in the ’90s, I had a blast playing Krusty’s Super Fun House on both the Super NES and Mega Drive/Genesis platforms. In this game, my mission was to guide characters from Krusty’s in-game show, like Milhouse or Troy McClure, through intricately designed mazes. The ultimate goal: eradicate rats infesting each level. Bart and Homer took on the roles of bosses, adding a fun and strategic challenge to each stage. This game was hugely popular upon release due to its engaging levels and unique blend of puzzle-solving and arcade action. To differentiate between console versions, the Super NES and Mega Drive/Genesis releases were titled Krusty’s Super Fun House. The “Super” in the title highlighted the improved graphics on these consoles, while perhaps paying homage to a renowned Italian plumber.

- Developers: Imagineering, Arc Developments
- Platform(s): Nintendo Entertainment System, Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Genesis, Master System, Game Gear

The second game featuring “The Simpsons” to be released and the initial one on a console is titled “The Simpsons: Bart vs The Space Mutants“. In this 2D side-scrolling platformer, players assume the role of Bart Simpson as he endeavors to save Springfield from an alien invasion.
In the style of Super Mario, Bart faces the Aliens by leaping on their heads to vanquish them as he advances through successively harder levels. The game offers a formidable challenge, complete with outdated controls, yet remains enjoyable despite being surpassed by contemporary titles. It represents a commendable addition to the series, albeit with some competitors that perform more smoothly.

This game presents an intriguing hurdle, adorned with stunning visuals and captivating mechanics. Among the various Simpsons games available, Night of the Living Treehouse of Horror stands out as one of the more impressive titles, despite not fully meeting the standards of contemporary video games.
5 The Simpsons: Road Rage
Poor Graphics, But An Engaging Driving GAme
- Release Date: 2001
- Developers: Radical Entertainment
- Platform(s): PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, Game Boy Advance
- Genre: Vehicular Combat
- Metacritic Rating: 64
As a gamer, I’d describe it like this: In “The Simpsons: Road Rage,” I get behind the wheel of characters from Springfield, and my mission is to give passengers a lift and drop them off at their desired locations as efficiently as possible. This gameplay shares plenty of similarities with Sega’s classic title, “Crazy Taxi.” However, Radical Entertainment faced some legal issues due to these similarities.
The graphics leave much to be desired in Springfield, and the town is lacking in detail. The controls also raise concerns. However, this game possesses an endearing quality that warrants recognition, especially among fans of a certain age. Without it, we may not have experienced the best Simpsons game to date. Consequently, a sufficient ranking is merited.
4 The Simpsons: Arcade

- Release Date: 1991
- Developers: Konami
- Platform(s): Arcade, Commodore 64, MS-DOS, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3
- Genre: Beat ’em up
- Metacritic Rating: 67
The Simpsons: Arcade is a beat ’em up game much like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game, Streets of Rage and Yakuzu. The genre was very popular in the 90s on arcade systems. The Simpsons dabbled in this, with the game first appearing as an arcade game, later being ported to Commodore 64, MS-DOS and much later for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but be thrilled about being among the first to play this extraordinary game. The opportunity to personally guide my beloved The Simpsons characters through battles and advance to new levels is truly exhilarating. This innovative gaming experience brought a fresh perspective to The Simpsons video games, making it an unforgettable journey for fans like me.

A must-try for both occasional and die-hard enthusiasts of “The Simpsons,” this game received criticism for its monotonous gameplay, problematic camera system, and brief playtime.
