As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement as the highly anticipated second season of Squid Game unfolds! With bated breath, viewers like myself are on the edge of our seats, eager to discover what lethal challenges Seong Gi-hun and his fellow competitors will encounter this time around. The dystopian survivor thriller genre might have been a niche when the first season of this blockbuster series debuted in 2021, but since then, others have emerged, daring to explore this unique and often eerie aesthetic.
Shows like Squid Game, with its unique elements such as a game show concept, futuristic backdrop, reality TV influence, and frequent violent scenes, have been replicated by several networks. These new shows cater to viewers who appreciate these themes and are seeking more of the same thrilling, eerie experience found in the strange and unsettling world portrayed in Squid Game.
7. Beast Games
Humanity Hits Rock Bottom
In today’s world, where late-stage capitalism seems overwhelming, a show like “Bum Fight” – once seen as a joke – begins to feel more plausible. The YouTube sensation Mr. Beast is viewed as either a hero or a villain, and his latest project has certainly stirred up controversy. Allegations of mistreatment on set, such as accounts of assault, exploitation, and potential danger to the players’ safety, have been raised, making it eerily similar to the plotlines seen in shows like “Squid Game“.
This is a grand-scale television competition, offering a substantial cash prize to the winner, though it comes with some unusual aspects. With over a thousand players from around the globe participating, this is the largest game show ever recorded. The competitors must navigate through a sequence of tasks designed to gradually reduce the number of contestants.
6. All Of Us Are Dead
High School Apocalyptic Horror
Blend a tale of adolescence and self-discovery with a narrative of apocalyptic dread, and you’ve got the zombie series called All of Us Are Dead. This Korean production unfolds in modern-day Hyosan, a fictional city boasting an elite high school. The science teacher here is remarkably inept, leading to a situation where he accidentally breeds and releases the Jonas Virus, elevating his character from bumbling educator to the central antagonist.
Combine a coming-of-age story with an apocalyptic horror tale, and you get the Korean zombie series All of Us Are Dead. Set in present-day Hyosan, a city featuring an exclusive high school, this show revolves around a science teacher who’s terrible at his job. In a twist of fate, he accidentally creates and sets loose the Jonas Virus, transforming him from a clumsy teacher to the main villain.
The narrative unfolds as students inexplicably transform into zombies, leading to an early focus on uncovering the source of this strange virus. This gripping series is based on the manhwa by Joo Dong-geun and goes by the English title School Attack.
5. Alice In Borderland
Trapped In An Abandoned Tokyo
The anime titled “Alice In Borderland” was already popular before it was turned into a live-action series, and they both stem from the original manga of the same name penned by Haro Aso. The storyline remains consistent, revolving around individuals trapped in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo that has been repurposed as a playground for games, where participants must solve riddles, answer questions, endure, and ultimately find their way out.
In this game setting called Borderland, where the entire series derives its name, participants encounter games that combine elements of trivia and playing cards as they venture through. The original comic book and animated series share a similar storyline. Similar to Squid Game, it’s less about horror and more about survival, yet it offers ample amounts of both for spectators to appreciate.
4. 3%
The Reward Is The Offshore
The Brazilian series 3%, which Netflix has produced, deserves greater acclaim, not solely due to it being their first Portuguese production. This chilling dystopian thriller skillfully weaves together aspects of game shows, survival situations, and class conflict, reminiscent of the Hunger Games, as it showcases the selection of impoverished youths who are offered the chance at a better life as contestants.
The narrative unfolds in a region known as The Inland, where at age 20, its hard-living, crime-prone, and impoverished inhabitants have the chance to participate in a contest called The Process. If they manage to overcome all the hurdles, just 3% of them can claim success and are granted entry into the prosperous Offshore society.
3. The Purge
Dystopian Horror In A Totalitarian State
The Purge has become a well-liked choice among viewers with an affinity for dystopian and apocalyptic settings in future narratives. The initial film, released in 2013, significantly expanded the genre’s boundaries. Unlike other genres such as dark fantasy or occult, this offers a more traditional blend of American action and horror, which could be invigorating for those who appreciate human-centered evil rather than supernatural entities.
The show’s authenticity makes it all the more chilling, as it seamlessly intertwines character development, storylines, and settings from the films. In this future-set world of 2027, the narrative revolves around a grim, dystopian America governed by a totalitarian regime, which permits lawlessness within a 12-hour window. With citizens enforcing their own justice, some manage to endure while others meet their demise.
2. Physical: 100
Often Compared To Squid Game
The main contrast between the “Physical: 100” game show and “Squid Game” lies in their nature. Unlike “Squid Game,” which is a fictional drama, “Physical: 100” is an authentic game show. Moreover, while “Squid Game” involves intense, life-threatening situations, “Physical: 100” is more about friendly competition and fun. Therefore, you could say that “Physical: 100” is closer to the spirit of American Gladiators, with a dash of audience appeal added in.
In essence, this show features a significant number of competitors initially, who undergo grueling and at times perilous physical tasks as part of a fierce competition. The objective is to test those in peak physical condition, with the ultimate victor earning 300 million Won, which is equivalent to about $240,000 USD.
1. Hellbound
Supernatural Dark Fantasy
In the vein of spine-tingling horror series akin to Death Note and Hellbound, this show explores the terrifying consequences of religious extremism. Set in contemporary Seoul, it intertwines elements of crime drama and poignant family struggles within a chilling portrayal of society teetering on the edge of ruin.
In my review, I find myself drawn into the early installments of this intriguing series, where I, as an observer, follow the tense dynamics between law enforcement and a student collective. At times, they seem diametrically opposed, yet occasionally, they form an uneasy alliance to unravel the macabre murders and eerie specters haunting their city.
The police force is primarily concerned with capturing a tangible culprit, while this student group exhibits a growing fervor, convinced that these sinister occurrences are manifestations of mankind’s defiance against divine ordinances. This spiritual versus secular conflict adds an intriguing layer to the narrative.
