Originally released on the NES in 1990, Dragon Quest 2: Luminaries of the Legendary Line has been updated and re-released as Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake for modern consoles like the Switch and PlayStation 5, as well as other platforms. While over thirty years have passed since the original, the remake keeps the classic Dragon Quest elements that fans love.

It’s a little boost to my Luck stat, which is awesome because higher Luck means I get more critical hits and enemies drop items more often. The game even tells you what each monster can drop, which is super helpful. If I don’t want to rely on just finding one randomly, I can actually buy a Rabbit Tail from a shop near Moonbrooke – it’s one of the first places you come to in the game, so it’s pretty easy to get!

Getting the Arriviste’s Vest

Players will need to wait until they recruit Peronel, a powerful mage and third party member, to obtain a crucial item. Once Peronel joins the team, players can return to the ruins of her castle to find the Thief’s Key. This key unlocks special red chests and doors that players have likely encountered throughout the game.

After you get the Thief’s Key in Dragon Quest 2 Remake, head back to Leftwyne and go to the Inn. You’ll find a chest in the first room containing the Arriviste’s Vest. This armor not only provides good protection, but it also helps you earn more gold in battles. If one of your characters wears the vest and each party member has at least one Rabbit’s Tail, you’ll be well-equipped to start collecting gold.

Farming Wizard’s Staffs

To continue the story in Dragon Quest 2 Remake, players must first explore the Wellspring of the Hero dungeon. This is one of the game’s early major dungeons, and during it, Caradoc’s sister, Matilda, will temporarily join your party. Inside the dungeon, you’ll encounter and battle many powerful enemies that look like wizards, called Maguses. Similar to the Bunicorn, Maguses have a chance to drop the Wizard’s Staff, which is a helpful item to obtain.

This item is helpful in combat because it lets you throw fireballs. In Dragon Quest 2 Remake, the Hero can’t learn spells for a long time, so this is a great way to get some extra firepower when you need it. Plus, you can sell a Wizard’s Staff for 250 Gold! If you’re lucky, you can repeatedly find and sell these staffs to make money. It’s a good idea to revisit this dungeon after you’ve recruited Caradoc, as having three party members – including Matilda – will make it easier to find more staffs. Alternatively, you could wait until you have Peronel to return.

An Early Enemy to Exploit

Okay, so finding gold can be tough, especially early on. But I recently discovered a great farming spot! If you head to the desert area around Oasis, you can find these funny little enemies called Bag O’Laughs. They look like walking bags, and seriously, they drop a ton of gold – 121 gold per enemy! At this point in the game, that feels like a huge amount, honestly. It’s a really efficient way to build up your wealth.

Bag O’Laughs aren’t very common enemies, but players can make battles start faster by learning the Whistle spell from Caradoc at level twelve. Like many classic RPGs, Dragon Quest 2 Remake uses random encounters, so whistling will trigger them. Players can keep whistling to fight enemies, and when they need to recover, they can rest at the small town of Oasis.

The Loyalty Card

You’ll also encounter Mummy Boys, enemies that look like traditional mummies. These enemies can drop Tombola Tickets, a rare type of currency used at special shops. You can find the first one in Moonahan and another in Oasis, where the grand prize is better. If you’re lucky, you might even get a Loyalty Card, a special item that reduces prices at all shops.

Early in any RPG, getting a discount card is a huge help. Once you have about ten Tombola Tickets, it’s smart to save your game, play a round of Tombola, and if you don’t win a Loyalty Card, reload your saved game. Regularly depositing Gold in a bank is also important to protect your earnings. The Dragon Quest series is challenging because you lose Gold when you die, and it’s gone for good. By using banks and aiming for a Loyalty Card, you’ll minimize lost or wasted Gold, effectively giving you an easy way to gain more.

Reselling Gear

Early in Dragon Quest 2 Remake, players can earn Gold by defeating weaker enemies in a few key areas. As they get stronger, they’ll find more challenging locations with tougher foes to help them level up and earn more Gold. However, no single enemy drops a lot of Gold – the best way to make money is by selling items. And the most valuable treasures are locked away, requiring players to find specific Key Items to access them.

The Thief’s Key is the first of many special items players will find. These items are used to unlock blue doors, open green chests, and access new areas. If you come across a locked door or chest, it’s a good idea to take a picture of it so you remember to come back once you have the right key or ability. This is a helpful trick for fans of Metroidvania games! These locked areas usually contain a lot of Gold or rare items that can improve your characters’ stats.
