Todd Howard, Angela Browder, and Emil Pagliarulo have given updates on the progress of The Elder Scrolls 6. Fans have been waiting over 14 years since the last game, and are eager for any news about its development.
Bethesda first announced The Elder Scrolls 6 back in 2018 with a short trailer that didn’t reveal much. Considering the announcement happened at E3, an event that no longer exists, it feels like a long time ago! Since then, the game has become a bit of a running joke – a warning about announcing games before they’re ready. Bethesda hasn’t been sitting still, though, and released Starfield in 2023. Even now, more than 14 years after Skyrim came out, very little is known about The Elder Scrolls 6. Fans rely on rumors and leaks for any information. Bethesda has confirmed the game is still being developed, but they’re keeping specific details under wraps.
Todd Howard Says The Elder Scrolls 6 is “Progressing Really Well”
In a recent interview with GameInformer, several key developers at Bethesda discussed the progress of The Elder Scrolls 6. Todd Howard, a long-time director and executive producer at the company, stated that development is “going really well.” He explained that most of the studio is currently working on The Elder Scrolls 6, but that Bethesda is accustomed to having multiple projects in development simultaneously, with extensive planning phases. While everyone wants the game to come out faster, they’re focused on ensuring it’s done right. Howard’s comments suggest that work on The Elder Scrolls 6 may have continued even while Starfield was being developed, potentially meaning the game could be released sooner than fans might think.
Studio Director Angela Browder expressed excitement about the game’s scope, noting that its current state would have been unimaginable to her even during her time working on Skyrim. She described The Elder Scrolls 6 as having “endless possibilities,” and highlighted how far the gaming industry has come, adding simply, “It’s gonna be amazing.”
Everyone would like to see things move more quickly, but we’re committed to doing this properly and taking the time needed to ensure a good result.
Studio Design Director Emil Pagliarulo recently addressed the long development time for the game, explaining that the team isn’t driven by the same urgency fans feel – and he understands that can be frustrating. He pointed to the delay of Grand Theft Auto 6 as a reminder that ambitious games from studios like Rockstar and Bethesda simply take a considerable amount of time to create. He then asked players to consider what they truly want: a rushed game that might disappoint, or a fully realized experience worth the wait, comparing the process to cooking a turkey – it needs enough time to be perfect. Pagliarulo assured fans that Bethesda will continue working until The Elder Scrolls 6 meets everyone’s expectations.
There was some speculation earlier in the year that Bethesda might unexpectedly release The Elder Scrolls 6 without much advance warning. While Oblivion Remastered did well, a surprise release for a game as big as The Elder Scrolls 6 would be unusual. Right now, fans are eager for any news about the game, even just to learn where it will be set, as that information hasn’t been revealed yet.
