Beyond Good and Evil 2 Survives Latest Wave of Ubisoft Cancellations

A recent report indicates that Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still in development at Ubisoft, despite recent company restructuring and cancellations of other projects. According to Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, the game has avoided cancellation, even though it’s been nearly 20 years since Ubisoft first announced the sequel.

The development of Beyond Good and Evil 2 has been a long journey. It started back in 2007, after director Michel Ancel mentioned a sequel in an interview with Nintendo Power, following the success of the original Beyond Good and Evil in 2003. Ubisoft officially hinted at the sequel in 2008 with a couple of early gameplay trailers, but development was paused shortly after so the team could work on Rayman Legends instead.

For years after its initial announcement in 2008, Ubisoft remained quiet about the status of Beyond Good and Evil 2. That changed in June 2017 with a new trailer, which revealed the original sequel concept had been completely scrapped and development had begun anew. Following reports of issues with workplace management, the game’s initial director, Michel Ancel, left Ubisoft in 2020, and Emile Morel took over. Sadly, Morel passed away in 2023. Ubisoft last officially confirmed in June 2024 that Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still in development.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 Is Reportedly Still In Development at Ubisoft

On January 21st, Ubisoft revealed significant changes within the company during an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. They confirmed the closure of their Stockholm studio and the cancellation of six games currently in development. These canceled projects included three brand new game ideas, as well as a remake of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time – a highly anticipated game originally announced in 2020 that had already faced numerous delays and a complete restart of its development.

Shortly after Ubisoft announced company restructuring, a report from Insider Gaming indicated that Beyond Good and Evil 2 hadn’t been cancelled and remains in development. According to Insider Gaming’s sources, the game’s lengthy and often-changed development has likely cost Ubisoft over $500 million. Considering the restructuring was intended to save the company €200 million, it’s surprising that Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still moving forward, particularly since there’s no confirmed release date.

In addition to canceling some games, Ubisoft has also delayed several others to improve their quality. A leaked internal document shows the company is giving seven projects more development time to reach higher standards. Specifically, one unannounced game originally slated for release in the 2026 fiscal year has been pushed back to 2027. Sources at Insider Gaming believe this is the much-anticipated remake of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, which was previously expected to launch in March.

Recent news has left the future of some of Ubisoft’s biggest games uncertain. While the remake of Splinter Cell, originally announced in 2021, is reportedly still being worked on, Ubisoft hasn’t made an official statement. The Division 3 received a brief update recently from its executive producer, but Ubisoft hasn’t confirmed whether the game will still move forward given the recent cancellations.
