Big Far Cry Upgrades Teased

Fans recently discovered, and Ubisoft has now confirmed, that three older Far Cry games will receive a performance boost to 60 frames per second (FPS) on modern consoles. The upgraded titles are Far Cry 3, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, and Far Cry Primal.

The Far Cry series began in 2004 and has become popular for its expansive open worlds, exciting first-person gameplay, and stories about surviving in dangerous, uncontrolled environments. While the first game was created by Crytek, Ubisoft has developed and released all the Far Cry games since then. It’s been a few years since Ubisoft released a new Far Cry title; the most recent was Far Cry 6 in 2021, featuring Giancarlo Esposito as the villain. Currently, Far Cry 6 has generally received mixed to positive reviews on Steam.

Three Classic Far Cry Titles Will Be Playable at 60 FPS Soon

For a while now, older Far Cry games like Far Cry 3, Blood Dragon, and Primal have been limited to 30 frames per second on consoles. But that’s about to change. Ubisoft recently posted a puzzle on X (formerly Twitter) using emojis, which fans quickly solved. The puzzle revealed that these three games will soon be playable at a smoother 60 frames per second on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Ubisoft confirmed correct guesses with a special badge, and announced the updates would arrive on January 21st. It’s still unknown whether these updates will be free, or if players will need to purchase them separately.

Players with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S can already enjoy older Far Cry games thanks to backward compatibility, which improves the graphics and adds features like auto HDR. However, PS5 owners might get an even better upgrade. Currently, PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers can play Far Cry 3 Classic Edition, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Classic Edition, and Far Cry Primal through the Game Catalog. It’s unclear if the upgraded versions of these games will also be available to subscribers, considering the monthly cost of $14.99. Far Cry 3 Classic Edition is also included with the Far Cry 5 Season Pass. As of now, details about the upgrades – like how large the downloads will be and what other improvements they include – haven’t been released.

Ubisoft May Have More Surprises Planned

Ubisoft recently hinted at something new for the Far Cry series, but that might be just the beginning. There’s a lot of talk that announcements for both Prince of Persia and Assassin’s Creed are coming soon. We could see Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake released, and a remastered version of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is also highly anticipated. Since people have been speculating about these games throughout 2025, Ubisoft might reveal more details at the start of 2026. However, it’s important to remember that all of this is based on rumors until Ubisoft officially confirms anything.

No matter what Ubisoft does next, players with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles will soon be able to enjoy three popular Far Cry games with smoother performance. As these consoles get further into their lifecycle, it remains to be seen if more older games will receive updates to better utilize the consoles’ capabilities.
