The PlayStation 5 came out in 2020, and it’s had fewer exclusive games made directly by Sony’s own studios compared to previous PlayStation consoles. Instead, Sony is releasing many of its games on PCs as well, reaching a larger audience than if they were only available on the PS5. While this strategy is smart for Sony, it doesn’t solve the bigger problems within the gaming industry.
Over the past six years, including 2020, we’ve seen a lot of video games get canceled, both from the companies that make consoles and from other publishers. Some of these games were announced to the public before being scrapped, while others were only revealed after they were canceled. It doesn’t matter if these cancellations were the right choice; let’s just take one last look at these lost games out of curiosity.
The Last of Us Online
From A Bonus Mode To A Standalone Project To A Canceled Dream
- Project Announced: 2022 (As A Standalone Game)
- Project Canceled: 2023
Since its debut in 2013, The Last of Us franchise has included two games and two seasons of a TV show. While two games over more than ten years isn’t a huge amount of content for fans, there were previously discussions about developing a third game.
I was really excited when I first heard about the multiplayer for The Last of Us Part 2, but it’s become something else entirely! It was actually evolving into its own game, just called The Last of Us Online. Sadly, even though I’d been following little bits of concept art and a leaked screenshot, Naughty Dog officially canceled it in 2023. It’s a shame we never even got a proper look at what it could have been!
Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland
Two For One
- Project Announced: 2021
- Project Canceled: 2024
Ubisoft canceled two games based on the work of Tom Clancy. The first, Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland, was a loot shooter similar to other games in The Division series. It was intended to have a large player-versus-player mode, but the project was ultimately canceled in 2024.
Another canceled game in the Ghost Recon series is Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Frontline, which Ubisoft stopped development on in 2022. It was planned to be a Battle Royale-style game. Currently, Ubisoft is reportedly working on a new Ghost Recon game, though its release isn’t guaranteed.
God Of War (Live-Service)
Moving Pantheons
- Project Announced: N/A
- Project Canceled: 2025
The God of War series began with Kratos battling Greek gods across three spin-off games and a main trilogy. It then shifted to Norse mythology, with Kratos as the protagonist, and told a complete story in just two games. Interestingly, a previous spin-off, God of War: Ascension, featured multiplayer gameplay, showing that the idea of online versus modes existed within the franchise long before recent discussions about a live-service God of War game similar to Destiny.
The project was kept under wraps, and ultimately canceled in 2025. While the team considered exploring mythologies beyond their current focus – like Egyptian or Shinto gods – we may never know their plans for sure. Leaked images suggest some Greek-inspired designs, but it’s still unclear what the game would have ultimately been.
Twisted Metal (Live-Service)
Smash Something
- Project Announced: N/A
- Project Canceled: 2024
The last Twisted Metal game was released on the PS3 back in 2012, and it’s been a while since then. More recently, Sony created a fantastic TV series based on the game, which you can find on Peacock.
A live-service game was in development that would have appealed to gamers, but the project was ultimately canceled. Similar to a canceled live-service game planned for God of War, details are scarce. The images that were shared actually came from the 2012 Twisted Metal game, as there are no known materials from the canceled project itself.
Wild
A Magical Druid Game
- Project Announced: 2014
- Project Canceled: Around 2021
The game Wild was previewed with some detail before being largely forgotten for decades. Originally announced in 2014, it showcased an action-adventure world inspired by mythology and mysticism, where players would control characters similar to Druids.
I remember when the game started fading away after a few showings, and it just… disappeared. It wasn’t officially cancelled, though, which left a lot of us fans wondering if it would ever come back. Apparently, the team quietly stopped working on it, but no one really knows when that happened – some say as early as 2021. It’s just frustrating not knowing for sure!
Wonder Woman
The Lasso Of Truth Hurts
- Project Announced: 2021
- Project Canceled: 2025
The upcoming Wonder Woman game isn’t being made by PlayStation Studios. It was actually in development at Monolith Productions. All that was ever revealed was a short teaser trailer featuring Wonder Woman, before the project was announced. Considering Monolith’s previous work, the game was expected to be an action-adventure title.
The game was planned to feature the Nemesis System – a technology from Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War that created unique enemies who adapted to how players fought. It’s strange that Warner Bros., who owns the rights to this system, also closed down both Monolith Productions and the Wonder Woman game development in 2025.
Spider-Man: The Great Web
A Spider-Man For All
- Project Announced: N/A
- Project Canceled: 2023
Insomniac’s Spider-Man games were incredibly popular and are considered one of the best video game trilogies of all time. So, it was a logical step for Sony to explore new ideas, like Spider-Man: The Great Web, which would have been a game centered around multiplayer experiences.
Insomniac was also working on another Spider-Man game where players could team up to fight iconic villains. Though never officially revealed, the project was canceled around 2023. A trailer and concept art showcasing the game leaked online in 2024, giving fans a glimpse of what could have been.
Warhammer Age Of Sigmar: Dark Frontier
Warhammer Souls
- Project Announced: N/A
- Project Canceled: 2025
With Warhammer games spanning many genres – from fast-paced shooters similar to Doom to action platformers like Contra – it was natural for the franchise to explore the challenging action RPG style of Soulslike games. Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Dark Frontier* was intended to be their take on this genre.
A previously unannounced game was quietly canceled at some point, but details emerged in 2025 when artwork appeared online. We may never see gameplay, so for now, Warhammer enthusiasts will have to picture it themselves. If you enjoy RPGs, you might also like Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr, an action RPG similar to Diablo.
