The iconic “Super Mario Bros” series is renowned for being one of the highest-selling video game collections. It boasts an array of distinct enemy characters and challenging boss battles, reflecting the originality inherent in each game. Each installment showcases a distinctive style and standout feature, ensuring that every new addition offers a fresh, exhilarating gaming experience, complete with an expanded gallery of formidable adversaries.

In addition to the detailed mechanics unique to each game that impact boss battles, size frequently plays a crucial role in ramping up the challenge of these bosses. Some exceptional Mario games include particularly large opponents that are tough to conquer.

7 The Whomp King

In the iconic game, Super Mario 64, the renowned Whomp King invites the pipe-wielding hero for a face-off at a one-on-one duel. This is his chance to demonstrate that he possesses skills beyond being a simple 2D character, known for jumping around in Bowser’s Castle.

1. To triumph in the fight, players need to repeatedly stomp on Whomp King. When subjected to numerous stomps at the back, the boss appears less menacing compared to others and is essentially a tough piece of stone that can be broken apart.

6 Mechawiggler

Mechanical Caterpillar Larger Than The Metro Kingdom’s Tallest Buildings In Super Mario Odyssey

Biggest Enemies in the Super Mario Games

In the game Super Mario Odyssey, there’s another large boss character named The Mecha Wiggler. This giant mechanical creature resembles the Wiggler you may know from the game. The battle takes place on top of the Empire State Building in New Donk City. Standing tall with an enormous size, Mario must enter a tank to defeat this robotic beast. He does this by shooting projectiles at the Mecha Wiggler. By successfully defeating this boss, Mario earns a multi-moon, making it a straightforward fight.

Rearranging the battle against this imposing electrical creature called Wiggler-like machine, which resembles the Broodal’s craftsmanship, can be made more challenging by players for a tougher fight. However, it’s worth noting that engaging such a colossus carries an inherent risk due to its intimidating stature and lethal capabilities in draining electricity. This isn’t an adversary you’d want to trifle with.

5 Planet-Sized Bowser

Biggest Enemies in the Super Mario Games

In “Super Mario Galaxy 2,” our hero Mario embarks on a journey through the cosmos to rescue the galaxy from the ruler with the most impressive eyebrows, Bowser. Unlike its predecessor in the series, “Super Mario Galaxy,” this time around, Bowser is absolutely gargantuan – as big as an entire planet!

Because Mario has eaten the power stars, he confronts a gigantic Bowser. The main plumber character then battles this massive foe as the game’s ultimate opponent. In the initial stage of the battle, players need to evade meteorites, fist attacks, and shockwaves. Towards the end, the challenge and visual impact increase significantly, with players engaging Bowser in space, vanquishing him by repeatedly pounding large yellow orbs at the colossal adversary.

4 Fury Bowser

Biggest Enemies in the Super Mario Games

In the unique and sole downloadable content for “Super Mario 3D World,” titled “Bowser’s Fury,” Mario bands together with adversaries like Bowser Junior to confront an enraged, Godzilla-esque Bowser who despises Mario beyond measure.

In the downloadable content (DLC), Bowser goes on a destructive spree. Players need to engage and defeat Bowser across various levels. Initially, Mario transforms into the colossal cat form to battle Bowser during the first two stages. In the third level, players navigate watery terrains to prevent Bowser from seizing Super Bell power-ups. This fight is the most challenging encounter in the Mario series.

3 Lord of Lightning

Super Mario Odyssey’s Giant Soulslike Worthy Dragon

Biggest Enemies in the Super Mario Games

In the game “Super Mario Odyssey,” The Lord of Lightning serves as a boss character and the ruler of the devastated Kingdom. He appears as a colossal, dragon-esque adversary, and players need to dodge his numerous lightning assaults to successfully land a stomp on his head. With each inflicted wound, the Lord of Lightning grows increasingly treacherous, unleashing more powerful lightning attacks that require skillful dodging.

As a dedicated fan, I must confess that the colossal scale of this adversary leaves me awestruck, and the rough, ominous design of the dragon certainly adds to the impression that I’m deep within a challenging, soul-like gaming experience devoid of easy victories. Among the Mario franchise’s bosses, Lord of Lightning stands out as one of the most impressive.

2 Gobblegut

Super Mario Galaxy 2 Features A Massive Dragon With An Appetite For Plumbers

Biggest Enemies in the Super Mario Games

In the game “Super Mario Galaxy 2”, you’ll come across a massive creature called Gobblegut – a cross between a serpent and a dragon. This colossal critter is Bowser Jr.’s pet, and it has quite the appetite! It enjoys feasting so much that it might just gobble up Mario for breakfast if given half a chance.

As a gamer, I spend my time smashing those inflated red segments on Gobblegut until he’s finally vanquished. To collect another shining star and finish off the game, I need to conquer that towering Mario boss first.

1 Megaleg

Super Mario Galaxy’s Huge Robot That Will Grind Mario’s Gears

Biggest Enemies in the Super Mario Games

In the early boss fights of Super Mario Galaxy, one formidable opponent is Megaleg, who stands out as one of the game’s largest adversaries. With its colossal dimensions, Megaleg is a giant mechanical robot that can only be defeated by climbing it. Players need to guide Bullet Bills towards Megaleg’s power star in order to destroy the barriers holding it captive. Once the star is seized, Megaleg succumbs to defeat.

In the game, Megaleg is the initial battle against Bowser Jr that players encounter, paving the way for more titanic battles in the series. It showcases how challenging these boss fights can be. The sheer size of this mechanical beast is a significant factor, making one wonder if Mario would rather be fixing plumbing instead.
