For quite some time now, community-created modifications ranging from minor adjustments to complete overhauls have been a significant part of the gaming landscape. Over the years, they’ve grown in popularity and scope, becoming increasingly elaborate and ambitious.
Regardless of how challenging or limiting certain video games might seem, a dedicated community will always find a way to customize their preferred titles. It’s indisputable that there’s an abundance of various mods available, with some being almost as expansive and innovative as the original games they were created for.
These modifications were selected based on their grand visions and extensive concepts, rather than just because of their file size or widespread popularity.
List Criteria:
– Must require the base game or assets (No standalone games)
– One mod per franchise (Honorable mentions included)
7. Project Reality (Battlefield 2)
A Realistic Overhaul For The 2005 FPS
- Mod Page: Project Reality
In 2005, Battlefield 2 marked the franchise’s initial exploration into modern warfare, following the triumph of its predecessors, Battlefield 1942 and Vietnam. Just like its predecessors, it was lauded for its gameplay, graphics, and overall authenticity in portraying reality at that time.
With the Project Reality modification, the gaming community has pushed realism to new heights, transforming DICE’s hit shooter into something that feels like an entirely new game. This mod takes a 2005 first-person shooter (FPS) and gives it a more intense, visceral feel by emphasizing team dynamics, logistics, and defense construction, and expanding server player limits to 100. Graphics and effects have also been updated in the mod, making Project Reality an exceptional experience for an FPS game that is over two decades old. Remarkably, this modification is still being actively developed today.
Honorable mention: Reality Mod (Battlefield 3)
6. LSPDFR (Grand Theft Auto 5)
Being A Cop In A GTA Game?
- Mod Page: LSPDFR
In a more conversational style: Grand Theft Auto was almost revolutionary when it came to open-world crime gaming, and it’s held that top spot ever since it first appeared. However, constantly taking on the role of a crook in each installment might start to feel repetitive at times, don’t you think?
Fortunately, there’s a massive modification for Grand Theft Auto 5 called LSPDFR. Instead of playing as a criminal, this mod lets players take on the role of a police officer within the game. They can patrol the streets of Los Santos or the rural areas of Blaine County, receiving radio calls about various situations, from a minor public disturbance to a high-intensity shootout. The experience is a complete contrast to the typical gameplay of the series and adds a new layer of excitement, especially when combined with other mods that expand its capabilities. Interestingly, the creators of this mod have also developed their own police-themed game which was released in 2025.
Honorable mention: LCPDFR (Grand Theft Auto 4)
5. DayZ (Arma 2)
The Classic ARMA 2 Mod That Paved The Way For The Standalone Game
Mod Page: Arma 2: DayZ Mod
Although the official standalone version of DayZ was launched in 2018, it’s important to note that this game originated from the Arma 2: DayZ Mod. Even though it’s not as popular today, its influence on gaming is significant and merits recognition.
In simpler terms, the DayZ mod transforms the highly realistic military simulation of Arma 2 into a survival game. It merges the challenge of battling AI zombies and real online players, dropping you in a massive map similar to Chernarus with just your clothes. You must navigate through different locations to search for weapons, armor, and other essential items. Along the way, you’ll encounter threats like roaming undead, rival players, and need to manage your character’s health indicators.
As a dedicated DayZ gamer, I can say that the initial mod laid down the fundamental building blocks for this survival game, paving the way for future developments. Now, it’s grown exponentially with the release of its standalone version, offering an even richer gaming experience.
Honorable mention: Unsung: Vietnam War Mod (Arma 3)
4. STALKER Anomaly (STALKER: Call Of Pripyat)
Making The Exclusion Zone Even More Unforgiving
Mod Page: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Anomaly
Regarding STALKER 2’s scheduled release in 2024, it’s worth noting that the original Stalker trilogy remains a fan favorite today. Among these games, Stalker: Call of Pripyat stands out particularly due to its thriving modding community, offering a wide range of modifications from minor enhancements to complete overhauls.
STALKER Anomaly isn’t simply a single modification, but rather a comprehensive overhaul of the original game. It’s a massive collection of various mods, skillfully combined to offer a unique gaming experience. This package includes new weapons, armor, survival mechanics, and numerous other additions to the Exclusion Zone. The mod has gained immense popularity, making it available for download with all necessary files pre-installed, eliminating the need for the original game. Best of all, it’s completely free!
Honorable Mention: MISERY (STALKER: Call of Pripyat)
3. Prophesy Of Pendor (Mount & Blade: Warband)
Giving Mount & Blade A Unique Fantasy Setting
Mod Page: Prophesy of Pendor
Since its debut in 2008 with the first game, the Mount & Blade series of action RPGs has frequently earned recognition for its epic-scale battles, particularly following its most recent release in 2020. However, it was in Mount & Blade: Warband that the series truly started to amass a sizable and devoted fan base.
Accompanying its surge in popularity also emerged various modifications, and “Prophecy of Pendor” stands out not only as one of the most favored but also among the most imaginative options. As a total conversion mod, it provides an entirely fresh fantasy backdrop for the game, complete with its own distinct narrative, factions, personalities, and a wealth of rich history that is all original, penned and crafted by the team responsible for it.
Discussing the unaltered aspects of Prophesy of Pendor would take less time compared to detailing its features. In essence, it’s an exceptional and well-respected overhaul modification that remains widely appreciated by players even now.
Honorable Mention: Shokuho (Mount & Blade 2)
2. Fallout London (Fallout 4)
Fallout Finally Crosses The Pond
- Mod Page: Fallout 4 London
The game Fallout 4 has seen a number of impressive mods with extensive development timelines, some taking several years or tragically being abandoned prior to completion. However, it’s not uncommon for these extensive projects to eventually bear fruit following years of dedicated effort.
Fallout London transports players from the typical retro-futuristic America to London, the city named in the title, and the UK capital itself. In this adventure, you assume the role of “The Wayfarer,” tasked with finding a mysterious man known as “Mr. Smythe.” You’ll find yourself amidst several factions that don’t see eye-to-eye. This version of Fallout offers a new perspective, brimming with its own original and imaginative concepts, while still remaining faithful to the universe’s lore. The mod strikes a perfect balance between innovation and adherence to the established lore. What’s more, it’s free for Fallout 4 owners on GOG, making installation effortless.
Honorable mention(s): Sim Settlements 2 (Fallout 4)
1. Project Tamriel (Morrowind)
Bringing The Entirety Of Tamriel To Morrowind
- Mod Page: Project Tamriel
As a devoted fan of The Elder Scrolls franchise, choosing a favorite mod among the countless options isn’t a walk in the park. However, if I had to single out one mod that leaves an indelible impression due to its expansive reach, it would be the one that stands tall amidst the sea of mods from every game in the series.
The Project Tamriel modification seeks to expand the playable map of The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind by incorporating additional regions from the game’s Tamriel universe as explorable areas. This ambitious project is divided into several teams, each responsible for developing a specific region they intend to add. While much of the content is still under development, some locations like Skyrim: Home of the Nords, Province: Cyrodiil, and Project: Hammerfell are already playable in a partial capacity. Each addition seamlessly integrates its respective province into the world of Morrowind.
This project is quite extensive, and there’s still a lot of ground to cover given that it was established in 2012. However, its progress over the years clearly demonstrates the community’s deep-seated affection and commitment towards this entire series.
Honorable Mention: Skyblivion (The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim)
