Biggest Games That Got Leaked Before Launch

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can say that leaked games have always been a double-edged sword. On one hand, they build excitement and anticipation among the community, but on the other, they can tarnish the reputation of developers and potentially harm sales.

Video game developers can find eagerness from players and hackers to be a double-edged sword. On one hand, they can generate excitement for an upcoming game by gradually revealing small details. However, this excitement might also lead some fans or hackers to resort to unethical methods to get more information, which they could then leak online. This premature release of information can damage the developer’s credibility, dampen anticipation for the game, and ultimately hurt sales.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but notice how many pre-launch games continue to spark intense conversations online. These games, now officially released, are still the talk of the town due to their grand scale and the impressive work of the hackers who managed to obtain and disseminate information about them. Of course, upcoming game leaks won’t be included in this discussion.

6 Grand Theft Auto 5

“You Forget A Thousand Things Every Day…”

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of GTA 5, one of this decade’s most anticipated games. There’s been a lot of buzz and leaks surrounding it, some of which turned out to be nothing more than tall tales, but others were spot on. For instance, there were initial whispers that GTA 5 would be set in Vice City, but then VG247 dropped hints suggesting Rockstar was scouting Hollywood for their next project, effectively confirming the game’s location.

Afterward, it was announced that auditions were taking place for both playable and background characters within the game. Although the final version of the game modified the character names, the casting call did provide information about their age, job, and temperament. Additionally, there were videos online pretending to show gameplay. Later on, a Polish website accidentally released a promotional poster featuring Franklin and his dog, suggesting that the game might come out in spring 2013.

Approximately a month before its launch, those who had pre-ordered GTA 5 on the European PlayStation Store received early access to certain game files. These files allowed them to uncover the game’s soundtrack and main theme ahead of the official release.

5 Fallout 4

Kotaku Taking The Charge

The second significant Bethesda-developed title in the Fallout series, following the fact that the initial two games and Fallout: New Vegas were not produced by Bethesda, experienced several significant leaks prior to its release.

Back in the day, I was just another gamer eagerly waiting for a big reveal about this upcoming game. At first, all we had were fake rumors that never panned out. But then, something authentic surfaced – it was Kotaku who dropped the bombshell with their now-legendary article. They spilled the beans on where the game would be set, unveiled casting documents, and a whole lot more juicy details. This was almost two years before the game hit the shelves! After that, Bethesda decided to cut Kotaku off from any exclusive developer updates.

4 Red Dead Redemption 2

The Leak Nobody Took Seriously

Rockstar has experienced numerous significant leaks throughout their history, and the second installment of their wild-west series, “Red Dead Redemption”, was not an exception. In fact, a former employee of Rockstar hinted at the development of the sequel as far back as late 2015 – three years before the official release of “Red Dead Redemption 2”. A few months later, the open-world map for the game, which eventually became “RDR 2”, was leaked. Although it deviated slightly from the final version, this leak marked a significant reveal for the game.

The biggest leak was, in fact, disregarded by everyone as it seemed too far-fetched at the time. No official details about the game had been announced by Rockstar, yet a Reddit user /u/reddeadinsider detailed almost everything about the game, the main character, the plot, and even how players take control of John Marston at the end of the game. Only after Rockstar released trailers talking about the protagonist and the plot did people come back to this Reddit post, realizing how accurate it was, nearly two years before the game’s release.

3 Half-Life 2

The Worst Way To Ask For A Job

Approximately one year prior to its release, the disclosure of Half-life 2 can be more accurately described as a burglary, orchestrated by a young individual named Axel Gembe, who hailed from Germany. He managed to infiltrate Valve’s internal system and, as a result, illegally obtained not just the game’s source code but also all developmental documents and even an unpolished version of the game itself.

1. The leak caused a substantial setback in the game’s launch, forcing Valve to overhaul their security and distribution plans. Interestingly, five months after the leak, Axel reached out to Gabe Newell, the CEO of Valve, offering his services for the company. Unfortunately, he was swiftly identified by the FBI and apprehended for his actions.

2 Gears Of War 3

Epic Games In An Epic Pickle

Just a few short months before Xbox Studio unveiled the third installment of their popular cover-shooter series “Gears of War,” a playable version of the game was illegally leaked online. Epic Games, the developers behind the game, were the source of the leak. Since the leaked version was far from finished, Epic soon issued a statement explaining that the leaked build was merely an early version and that the final version would be much more refined and polished.

Despite efforts to keep it secret, much of the gameplay and the main campaign from an early version of the game found its way onto YouTube. This not only spoiled the game for numerous players but also dampened fan enthusiasm because of the quality of that particular build.

1 Horizon Forbidden West

Alpha Aloy Makes An Appearance

Prior to the official release of “Horizon Forbidden West” on PS5, an early, debugged version of the game mysteriously leaked online. The source of this leak remains unknown, but on December 28, 2021, a file named “TestGame” became available for download on PSX, a widely used PlayStation hacking platform.

Users managed to download and play an early version of the game on their jailbroken PS4 consoles, as this version had its debug menu active. This allowed players to explore areas and discover things within the game that were intended to be hidden. Removed features from the final edition of the game were also present in this build. Two years after the official release of the game, this early build can still be found online.
