Great detective stories often conceal clues right before our eyes, leaving us frustrated when we finally realize what we missed. Anime opening sequences sometimes do the same thing, hinting at future plot points that longtime manga readers might pick up on, but newer viewers might not notice. Similarly, many popular PlayStation RPGs have revealed key story details early on for players who were observant.
I love trying to figure out the little mysteries and twists in games! Not every one of them is a huge deal, but they always get me thinking. I always wonder if those little details were intentionally put there for us to find, or if they were just accidents by the game creators. Honestly, it’s something they might never tell us! But even though they can be tricky to talk about in detail, I’ve put together some good explanations of a few of them.
There will be spoilers for the following examples.
Final Fantasy 8
The Guardian Forces
In Final Fantasy 8, Summons are known as Guardian Forces, or GFs. Players can assign these GFs to characters and use them to learn magic from enemies. Instead of equipping armor and accessories, you equip the magic to the GFs to boost your stats. This system is great for characters like Squall, but there’s a catch. If you explore Balamb Garden and read emails early in the game, you’ll discover that using GFs causes memory loss. This cleverly explains why the characters don’t remember knowing each other as children, and while a spell is involved, the GFs are largely responsible for their collective amnesia.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Gone Too Soon
The game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is full of surprises, and while figuring out the major twist – that the world is actually a painting – would be a real challenge, some reveals are more predictable. One example is the fate of Gustave, the initial player character. He has a limited skill set compared to others, which hinted he might either get a significant upgrade later or, more likely, wouldn’t survive long. This subtle detail could have foreshadowed his death early in the game.
Dragon Quest 11: Echoes Of An Elusive Age
Talking About Tockles
Okay, so I finally finished Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age, and wow, it’s a commitment! It took me around sixty hours just to get to the final boss. What’s really weird is there are these little ghost-like things, called Tockles, that I could see running around the whole time. Nobody else in the game seemed to notice them, it was just me! I figured they had to be important, and tied into some big twist, which they were. But the first time through the final boss fight, things didn’t go so well. Then, the leader of the Tockles lets me go back in time to fix everything, which added another twenty to thirty hours to my playthrough. Seriously, this game is huge!
Fallout 4
Where Is My Baby?
In Fallout 4, players begin by creating both a male and a female character, establishing their relationship before the nuclear bombs fall. They then choose which character to play as. This couple has a son named Shaun, and when the bombs start dropping, the player enters a cryogenic chamber while their spouse enters one with Shaun.
When players come out of cryosleep, they witness a shocking scene: a couple murders each other’s spouse and then steals a baby named Shaun. After losing consciousness, the player awakens to find themselves in a post-apocalyptic world and begins a desperate search for their child. Considering cryosleep can last for years, players might have expected their baby to be much older when they finally woke up.
Final Fantasy 10
Dreams Of The Faith
Final Fantasy 10 begins with Tidus playing Blitzball in Zanarkand, which is suddenly destroyed by a massive wave and monsters. He wakes up in a strange place and learns from Yuna and her Guardians that his home was actually destroyed a thousand years prior. This creates a mystery – players might assume time travel or different dimensions are involved, but the truth is even more unsettling. The game establishes that spirits of the dead can manifest physically as ‘Dream of the Faith,’ leading some players to realize that Tidus himself is essentially a ghost.
NieR: Automata
Humanity’s Last Hope
NieR: Automata starts in a space station, humanity’s last refuge, where two androids, 9S and 2B, are sent to Earth to fight the machines that have taken over. They receive their orders from a supposed human government, but no humans are ever actually seen. The game is played through three different perspectives: first as 9S, then 2B, and finally as A2. Through these campaigns, players discover that humanity went extinct long ago, and the AI running the space station is maintaining the illusion that humans still exist. Because players never encounter a real human in space, they might anticipate this twist or at least suspect something isn’t right.
Kingdom Hearts 2
RPG Anagrams
Players familiar with Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories quickly understood Roxas’s connection to Sora in Kingdom Hearts 2. The earlier game introduced Organization 13, where all the members’ names included an ‘X’ – characters like Axel, Marluxia, and Larxene. Though the game doesn’t explicitly state it, and their true identities aren’t revealed until later, it’s clear Roxas’s name is simply an anagram of Sora with an added ‘X’. The characters share a striking resemblance, making the connection an obvious clue before the story fully explains it.
Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom
The Missing Link
Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom begins with Roland, a king, witnessing a devastating explosion. He then awakens in a fantastical world and encounters Prince Evan. Fans of the original Ni no Kuni will recognize a pattern: each world features characters who are counterparts to those in other worlds, acting as reflections of each other.
Right from the start, things feel off because Roland doesn’t encounter his twin as expected. This, combined with the surprisingly early introduction of a masked villain named Doloran, raises questions. It’s eventually revealed that Doloran is essentially this world’s version of Roland – a twist most viewers likely guessed, as Doloran’s name is just a slight rearrangement of Roland’s.
Metaphor: ReFantazio
The Nature Of Humans
The fantasy game ReFantazio features enormous, monstrous creatures called Humans, who often serve as challenging bosses. These creatures are intentionally designed to be as intimidating as the Titans from Attack on Titan. However, the game reveals a surprising backstory: these ‘Humans’ aren’t a naturally occurring species, but rather humans who were drastically mutated long ago. The game’s world was once Earth, hinting at a connection that observant players, especially those familiar with Attack on Titan, might pick up on.
Final Fantasy 16
Knowing Summoner Lore
The beginning of Final Fantasy 16 features a massive battle between two powerful summons, called Eikons. Ifrit defeats Phoenix and destroys the nation of Rosaria, which is the home of the main character, Clive. During the fight, Clive’s brother, Joshua, who had become Phoenix, seemingly dies. Fueled by this loss, Clive vows revenge against Ifrit – though it’s heavily hinted that Clive is Ifrit and simply doesn’t remember. As anyone familiar with Final Fantasy or fantasy stories knows, Phoenixes are known for their ability to come back to life, and it’s eventually revealed that Joshua survived the battle.
