Highlights
- Summons in the Final Fantasy series include beings such as a transforming spaceship robot, massive dragons, and cathedral-sized fortresses.
- These summons can be city-sized airships, towering satellite dragons, or coast-sized sea monsters.
- The summons in Final Fantasy can effortlessly dwarf entire cities, reshape landscapes, and utilize their tremendous size and power to aid their summoner.
As a longtime enthusiast of the Final Fantasy series, I must say that the sheer scale and magnitude of these summons are nothing short of mind-boggling! Each one of them possesses an unparalleled level of power and size, leaving mortal beings in awe.
Characters in every Final Fantasy journey often encounter challenging situations. They might battle against catastrophes, hostile armies from malevolent empires, or struggle with their personal inner struggles. Occasionally, a foe is so immense and terrifying that even the largest sword is incapable of dealing damage. In such instances, the sole chance for survival lies in seeking aid from a higher entity. Fortunately, the Final Fantasy multiverse is recognized for its array of benevolent demigods and celestial protectors, who have proven themselves worthy to lend their power.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited when I manage to summon a powerful entity. These summons can be game-changers during challenging moments, or they can serve as valuable rewards for side quests. The arrival of a new summon is always a noteworthy milestone in my journey, and they come in an incredible variety of shapes, elements, and sizes. To make it onto my list, these summoned creatures must tower at least as high as a two-story building, though determining their size can be tricky from one game to another. However, each summon will be ranked by its comparative scale, with some entities being so massive they could easily dwarf entire cities – even the ones depicted in cutscenes, not just those on the overworld map.
6 Ark – Final Fantasy 9
The Transforming, Spacefaring Mega Mecha
A colossal spaceship with the ability to morph into a towering battle robot might seem unusual in a fantasy setting, but it manages to blend perfectly. In its sleek, yet recognizably “Final Fantasy” airship form, Ark boasts a dragon’s head and a massive sword protruding from its helm. In its humanoid form, Ark is equipped to fire a heavy artillery barrage guided by lasers and unleash an energy blast from the tip of its sword.
Following its metamorphosis, Ark discharges its cargo from up high, making it tricky to estimate its dimensions in either state. However, since the eidolon airship is called a “cruiser,” it likely has sufficient space to house an entire town’s population. Yet, whether people could inhabit it during transformation or survive such a process remains uncertain.
5 Bahamut ZERO – Final Fantasy 7
The Great Spacefaring Satellite Dragon
The precise dimensions of Final Fantasy 7’s most potent summon, Bahamut ZERO, are somewhat unclear due to its ability to move and attack from beyond Earth’s atmosphere in space. Yet, hints suggest that Bahamut ZERO is incredibly large. For instance, Bahamut SIN, the only previous incarnation of Bahamut (which some fans consider underutilized in Advent Children), was depicted as looming over tall structures amidst the ruins of Midgar.
In the world of Final Fantasy 7, as Bahamut grows larger with each game version, it’s logical to assume that ZERO, being a cosmic entity, might be smaller than SIN due to the lack of gravity constraints on its growth. However, given its interstellar prowess, ZERO could very well be the largest dragon out there. The sheer size of its destructive power, capable of carving out a crater the size of a small nation, hints that ZERO might dwarf even the Bahamut portrayed in Advent Children in terms of scale.
4 Alexander – Final Fantasy 6
The Kingdom, Castle, And The Knight All In One
In various modern installments of the “Final Fantasy” series, this character known as both knight and living fortress has been present, taking on different forms over time. His appearance ranges from something between a gigantic battle mech and a colossal war machine that could house a cathedral. Regardless of his scale, he is designed to combat evil with the fiery breath of righteousness. In the upcoming “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth”, Alexander is shown to be roughly the size of a typical home or airship.
In the realm of Final Fantasy 9, I can’t summon Alexander like some other characters might. But let me tell you, he doesn’t need to be summoned because when he shows up, it’s in the form of a colossal winged fortress that towers over Alexandria Castle. Now, if we’re talking about size, the biggest version of Alexander I’ve seen was in Final Fantasy 6. According to the game’s final cutscene, he appeared as a floating fortress in the sky, making Kefka and his magic enhancement look like child’s play. To top it all off, he incinerated Kefka as retribution for causing worldwide devastation with an almighty blast. That’s one boss fight I wouldn’t want to face!
3 Titan – Final Fantasy 15
The Living, Walking, Brawling Mountain
In Final Fantasy 15, there’s only one character who can measure up to a living mountain and engage in combat: Titan. If you encounter a giant tortoise, a colossal god-serpent capable of causing tsunamis, or anything else that falls into the astronomical size category, this ground-based ally is likely your best bet for going toe-to-toe with them.
Titan is so massive that his footsteps reshape the land in its wake. At his full height, Titan stands just under 500 feet tall. He would be able to clean the entire horizon from left to right on a light jog. Titan uses this speed to run to Noctis’ aid when he’s in trouble, reshaping geological maps by hurling landmasses at those who threaten his life.
2 Leviathan – Final Fantasy 15
The Coast-Sized Star Monster of The Sea
The Leviathan, who is often perceived as taller than herself, boasts an impressive length of 3,377 feet, making her a colossal figure even compared to the titanic astral known for his towering stature on Earth. Her long form and massive fins enable her to glide smoothly through the ocean’s depths. Interestingly, within the open world of Final Fantasy 15, she can appear at will, provided there is sufficient water for her entry point.
As a devoted admirer, I’d put it this way: Leviathan possesses an effortless destructive power over the serene human colonies on Eos. With a casual stride and a gentle roll, her immense bulk could flatten entire settlements without breaking a sweat. Should she wish to, she could devour groups of humans with just one mighty chomp. Yet, Leviathan prefers not to engage in direct combat. Instead, she uses her prodigious length and mass to generate a whirlpool of water so powerful, it can ensnare adversaries of any size or sweep away everything in its path.
1 Eden – Final Fantasy 8
A City-Sized Starship Attached To An Aetherial Being Beyond Mortal Comprehension
In Final Fantasy 8, Eden, the last summon, stands out by being described as something akin to a skyscraper-sized being or a humongous airship. However, it’s unique because it embodies both descriptions at once. Suspended beneath what resembles an intergalactic greenhouse (not to be confused with a regular garden), is the half-organic form of a celestial titan.
Whenever I call upon Eden, it’s a struggle to take it all in at once. This colossal guardian casts such an ominous shadow that it darkens the skyline and clears the clouds as it approaches, lifting enemies high above the fray. Its attack, renowned for its destructive might within the Final Fantasy universe, transforms our planet into a cosmic cannon. Anything in its line of fire gets blasted out of orbit, hurtling through space towards distant galaxies, eventually meeting their end inside a black hole.
