As a long-time enthusiast of the Naruto universe, I can confidently say that the characters’ complexities and intricate narratives have always left me spellbound. Among these captivating personalities, there are several who stand out due to their betrayals, and today, I’d like to share my thoughts on some of the most noteworthy ones.
In the annals of anime from the 2000s, Naruto and its sequel Naruto Shippuden have left indelible marks, with their unforgettable characters and scenes becoming legendary. The story follows Naruto, a spirited young ninja with distinctive yellow hair, as he embarks on a quest to become the village’s leader, the Hokage. Along the way, he encounters numerous individuals, forming friendships and stirring up enmity wherever he goes.
Through compelling emotional narratives, the series Naruto has cultivated connections with characters that people worldwide hold close to their hearts. However, it also portrays gut-wrenching acts of betrayal that are integral to the plot and the development of our protagonist. Notably, this anime features significant traitors who either lack loyalty or have deceived their allies, friends, mentors, and entire villages at some point.
10 Itachi Uchiha
Killed His Family And Clan To Avoid War
Introducing one of Naruto’s characters often perceived as betrayers, Itachi Uchiha is actually Sasuke’s elder sibling. In an unexpected turn of events, he tragically massacred his entire clan, including his immediate family, sparing only his younger brother. This act of treachery cast a long shadow over him for years, leading him to ally with the notorious rogue ninja organization, the Akatsuki.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but acknowledge that Itachi’s actions elevate him in my rankings. Unveiled as a covert operative for the Hidden Leaf village, he played a pivotal role in safeguarding his village, even if it meant betraying his family and clan to prevent a devastating war. He bore the weight of this sacrifice and accepted the label of traitor wholeheartedly.
9 Mizuki
A Ninja Teacher Who Tried Killing Naruto And Stealing A Scroll
Kick-starting Naruto’s transformation from a troublemaking kid into a formidable ninja involves overcoming Mizuki, the initial antagonist. Prior to attempting to slay Naruto and pilfer the Seal Scroll, Mizuki was cherished among the village’s ninjas; however, he swiftly betrayed the youngster.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but view Mizuki’s actions as undeniably malicious when he attempts to harm the innocent, bumbling Naruto, a child under my care in this beloved series. Initially, his treachery was one of the first instances of betrayal we witnessed, yet it didn’t last long. His deceit and wickedness, though significant, lost their shock value due to his brief stay in the story, diminishing the profound impact they had on our hero.
8 Kabuto
A Friendly Face Turned Orochimaru’s Greatest Spy
Initially, Kabuto presents as a kind-hearted competitor in the Chunin Exams, assisting Naruto and his companions during the contest. But soon enough, it becomes clear that he is operating under Orochimaru’s command, spying to gather information about Sasuke.
Apart from attempting to assassinate Tsunade, clashing with the main character on several occasions, and acquiring Orochimaru’s abilities, he becomes a member of Akatsuki during the Fourth Great Ninja War, striving for recognition. Despite engaging in reprehensible acts, his actions can be attributed to a background marred by tragedy.
7 Nagato/Pain
Becomes Part Of The Akatsuki And Kills His Master
Among the most formidable antagonists in the series ‘Naruto’, there’s Nagato, also known as Pain, who carries an intensely moving past marked by sorrow, pain, and deception. Despite causing significant destruction, nothing seems quite as harsh as his act of taking the life of his previous mentor, Jiraiya.
Nagato’s primary driving force is suffering, which gives some rationale to his actions, yet his assault on the Hidden Leaf and his collaboration with Akatsuki demonstrate the depths of his descent. Guided by misfortune, Nagato eventually finds redemption in a poignant manner; however, the death of his mentor will forever cast a shadow of betrayal over him.
6 Danzo
Attempts To Control The Village From The Shadows In A Quest To Become Hokage
Danzo, a character from Naruto, is known for being one of the most reprehensible figures. He often executes important tasks behind the scenes, striving for greater power, even going as far as betraying the Leaf Village – all while claiming he does it for the village’s welfare. From planning to assassinate the Third Hokage to manipulating Itachi for his own ends, Danzo is remarkably ruthless in his pursuit of power, with few lines he won’t cross to achieve it.
As a stealthy gamer, I’m orchestrating every pawn on the board without a soul suspecting me. Danzo, in my game world, is that cunning, treacherous character who’ll backstab anyone for his own gain. His ultimate goal? To seize the throne as Hokage, not caring about the well-being of our village.
5 Sasuke Uchiha
Leaves The Village And Betrays All Of His Allies In Search Of Revenge
Originally a close friend and fierce rival of Naruto, Sasuke has a long history of disloyalty and deception that earns him a poor reputation as a friend. His actions include abandoning Naruto and the rest of Hidden Leaf to train under Orochimaru, and his unquenchable thirst for revenge often leads him down a path of deceit with no regard for loyalty.
Through his actions such as attacking Karin, plotting against his village, and deceiving Orochimaru, Sasuke is often perceived as a betrayer by many he encounters. Despite some instances of redemption, his repeated acts of treachery and attempts on Naruto’s life solidify him as one of the most notorious traitors within the series.
4 Obito Uchiha
Killed His Sensei And Joined The Villain
As a child, Obito shared Naruto’s spirited and caring personality, providing warmth to his team and his friend Kakashi. However, his path took a dark turn as he joined the Akatsuki and became Madara’s trusted ally, playing a significant role in the plot to annihilate the ninja world – a monumental act of deception that left a lasting impact within the Naruto universe.
Over the span of many years with Madara, Obito transformed into a wicked character, committing numerous harsh deeds such as causing Minato’s demise – not only Naruto’s father but also his mentor. His deceitful actions paved the way for devastation, though he managed to make amends somewhat in the end and recognized his errors.
3 Black Zetsu
Manipulated Everyone To Accomplish His Goals
As a dedicated Naruto fan, I can’t help but notice that Black Zetsu, though seemingly an ally to Madara, exhibits classic Naruto betrayal by revealing his manipulation of Madara for the revival of Kaguya. Although it may not be as heart-wrenching as other deceits, the unexpected twist of Black Zetsu stabbing Madara in the back is undeniably intriguing.
In essence, Black Zetsu stands out as an exceptional deceiver, managing to trick Madara while maintaining a discreet presence within the Akatsuki ranks. It’s only in the climactic scenes that he reveals his true colors as a treacherous figure.
2 Orochimaru
Kills, Deceives, And Betrays In Search Of Immortality
In the realm of betrayals, Orochimaru stands out as a key figure in many crucial plot twists within Naruto. He betrayed the village he once swore to protect, attempted its destruction on multiple occasions, and even took the life of his former mentor. Throughout the anime, Orochimaru’s deceit has been a recurring theme.
He performs numerous actions with the goal of achieving immortality and power, driven by an extremely self-serving ambition that significantly impacts the entire ninja community. Despite undergoing some form of redemption towards the end, his actions are so severe that he remains known as a traitor, particularly given his close ties to the Third Hokage, Tsunade, Jiraya, and the village.
1 Madara Uchiha
Pulling The Strings For Years As The Village’s First Traitor
In the realm of ninja lore, Madara Uchiha, who famously betrayed his team and served as a key antagonist in Naruto Shippuden, is a name synonymous with infamy. Wielding immense influence over the storyline in Naruto, Madara manipulated numerous characters and villains, eventually transforming into the TenTail Jinchuriki. This act of betrayal towards his student Obito came dangerously close to sealing the fate of humanity.
At first, Madara collaborated with Hashirama in establishing the village, but later turned against both the village and his closest friend by leading the Uchiha down a different path. Despite a life riddled with discord and remorse, Madara failed to make amends for his actions, making his betrayals even more unforgivable. With a significant part in shaping the village, Madara was nonetheless tainted by his clan’s past. Instead of walking the path of righteousness alongside Hashirama, he opted for a road paved with hatred.
