Despite challenges like issues with AI, increasing game costs, and rising PC hardware prices, 2026 is shaping up to be an amazing year for gaming. We’re really excited about major upcoming releases like GTA 6, Fable, and Resident Evil: Requiem, and that’s just the beginning! The mid-tier and independent game scenes also look fantastic, with titles like Paralives, Subnautica 2, and Slay the Spire 2 generating a lot of excitement. Plus, updated versions of classic games – including Gothic 1 and Deus Ex – should attract new and returning players.
There are some exciting open-world survival RPGs in development, and I’ve found a few that look promising for release this year. It’s difficult to find games that perfectly fit all three genres, so I’m being a little flexible with what I consider an ‘RPG’. However, you can expect expansive open worlds combined with classic survival elements like crafting and building. These games also include RPG features such as character specialization, skill upgrades, and potentially quests, stories, and characters to meet.

As One We Survive
A Quest To Save Your Ailing Daughter In A World Ravaged By A Pandemic
While As One We Survive isn’t officially labeled as an RPG on Steam, it shows strong potential. Though it’s too soon to say for sure, early details – like a story mode, characters to talk to, and skill improvements – suggest it has RPG elements. Even if it’s a lighter RPG experience, combined with its solid open-world survival gameplay, it deserves to be recognized.
You’re immediately thrown into a world after a disaster, where you need to survive, care for your sick daughter, and lead a group of other survivors. You’ll build defenses, collect resources, and prepare for the future. What makes this game stand out is its story – you can either focus on simply surviving or experience a full narrative. You can also team up with companions if you don’t want to explore on your own. It feels similar to Project Zomboid, but with added features for managing a settlement. We’ll have a better idea of what to expect when the Early Access version is released around the second quarter of 2026.
Delverium
A Mix Of Terraria And Stardew Valley In One Charming Package
If you enjoy games like Stardew Valley and wish they had more RPG elements, or if you like Terraria but prefer a 2D perspective, Delverium might be perfect for you. It features charming pixel art that will appeal to fans of cozy and retro games, and offers a vast, open world to explore. Because the world is randomly generated, every playthrough is unique, with plenty of colorful areas to discover resources, interesting creatures, and other surprises.
This game combines the relaxing elements of farming and town-building with adventure. Like other games in the genre, you’ll manage resources and villagers, but you can also explore dungeons and caves. It’s not a deeply complex RPG, but focuses on upgrading your equipment and finding valuable items, similar to Terraria. Early details suggest a larger world mystery to discover as you play. The game is currently expected to launch around the second quarter of 2026.
Highreach
A Procedurally Generated Fantasy Survival RPG
This year’s lineup includes a particularly interesting new game called Highreach. It blends role-playing combat and character development with the challenges of building and managing a settlement. The game takes place in a world of floating islands, remnants of a cataclysmic magical event that shattered the land. As an adventurer, you’ll explore this fractured world aboard your own airship, uncovering its mysteries and what lies beyond the horizon.
This game feels like a blend of titles such as Enshrouded and Outward, sharing base-building elements with the former and challenging survival mechanics with the latter. What really stands out is that the characters you bring into your settlement have their own unique backstories and quests you can explore. It’s unusual to find a game that combines so many different types of gameplay, but Highreach seems to pull it off. We probably won’t have to wait long to find out more, as it’s currently slated for Early Access release in the first quarter of 2026.
Endalor
Dark Fantasy With Brutal Survival Gameplay
If you enjoyed Enshrouded, keep an eye on Endalor. It seems promising, but with a much grimmer and more challenging atmosphere, filled with frightening creatures and a harsh world. Those who like Soulslike or Souls games will likely be interested, as the combat feels similar, relying on stamina management. Expect tough boss fights, character progression through experience points, and lots of different ways to customize your character.
The game world is beautiful and full of life, featuring diverse environments like forests, dangerous dungeons, and mysterious caves – though it’s also quite perilous! It feels similar to the game Outward, where careful planning and preparation are key to survival. You’ll also need to build and maintain a home base to store your items and recover after battles. If this sounds appealing, look for a chance to play Endalor in Early Access around the first quarter of 2026. Best of all, you can play with up to four friends!
Outward 2
The Challenging Survival RPG Gets A Second Installment
We’re finally here with what’s shaping up to be the biggest open-world survival RPG of 2026! Outward 2 builds on the original game, promising a larger, improved, and more refined experience. If you haven’t played the first Outward, it’s a great idea to do so now to get acquainted with its challenging but stunning world before the sequel arrives.
Get ready for a challenging experience when you return to the world of Aurai! This game doesn’t hold your hand – you’ll need to learn to survive and, if you’re lucky, flourish completely on your own. Success depends on staying hydrated, getting enough rest, and improving your skills. Exploration is done entirely on foot; there are no mounts or quick travel options. The game emphasizes realism in every detail, even equipping your backpack will slow you down during fights. Players can expect to get their hands on the game in the third quarter of 2026.
