For quite some time now, there has been little to no significant discussion about BioShock 4. As far back as December 2019, publisher 2K made it official that a fresh installment of the BioShock series was being created at the new studio, Cloud Chamber. Since then, there has been almost complete silence regarding any updates, with neither Cloud Chamber nor 2K providing any new information apart from some job postings from last year which merely verified that the sequel is still under active development.
There’s still much about the upcoming game, BioShock 4, that fans are unaware of, but given that the development is in the hands of Cloud Chamber studio, it looks promising. Although Cloud Chamber is a fresh team, they have key members from previous BioShock productions, including Hoagy de la Plante, who was a lead environment artist on the first two BioShock games and will now take up the role of creative director for BioShock 4. This means that the game should provide an authentic BioShock experience, but it also has the potential to surpass being just another installment. It could potentially offer a concluding chapter for the series.

The Original BioShock Was Heavily Influenced by Immersive Sims
Known as a significant figure in today’s gaming world, Ken Levine played a crucial role in shaping the ‘BioShock’ series, serving as its creative lead, director, and primary writer for both ‘BioShock’ and ‘BioShock Infinite’. However, prior to his work on ‘BioShock’, he contributed to the creation of some of the most highly respected immersive sims in gaming history.
In the late 90s, Ken Levine joined Looking Glass Studios and played a role in creating “Thief: The Dark Project,” a groundbreaking game that helped establish the immersive simulation genre. Later on, in 1997, Levine teamed up with Robert Fermier and Jonathan Chey to form Irrational Games, which produced “System Shock 2,” another notable title in the same genre. When it was time for them to develop “BioShock,” Levine drew heavily on his previous experiences, infusing elements of immersive simulation into the game.
BioShock Was Never a True Immersive Sim
While BioShock certainly offers an immersive experience, especially with its unique Rapture setting and creative Plasmid system for dealing with enemies, it doesn’t fully meet the definition of a true immersive sim by today’s standards. The game’s structure is quite linear, both in terms of level design and narrative progression, offering limited player freedom in how objectives are approached. Consequently, most encounters tend to devolve into firefights.
It’s The Perfect Time for BioShock 4 to Embrace its Immersive Sim Roots
Despite some viewers finding its pursuit of realism overwhelming, the genre of immersive sims has experienced a revival lately, boosted by popular releases like “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” and “Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2”. These games provide ample player autonomy, a series of non-linear goals, and an exceptionally engaging world for players to delve into.
Perhaps it’s high time for the BioShock series to fully embrace its immersive sim foundations. In BioShock 4, players could find themselves in expansive, interconnected environments that invite exploration at their leisure, with various options available for accomplishing objectives and a versatile toolset that encourages creative play. By doing so, the game would not only seem like a natural progression but also an exciting leap forward within the series.
