BioShock 4’s Biggest Hurdle is Clear After BioShock: Infinite

As a long-time enthusiast of the BioShock series and one who has navigated through the hauntingly beautiful Rapture multiple times, I must admit that I am both excited and apprehensive about the upcoming BioShock 4 from Cloud Chamber. The legacy of Ken Levine’s masterpiece is a heavy mantle to bear, and while I have faith in Cloud Chamber’s abilities, I can’t help but wonder if they will be able to create something that truly lives up to the greatness of BioShock Infinite and its enigmatic protagonist, Booker DeWitt.

The world eagerly anticipates any signs of progress from Cloud Chamber, the studio working on the follow-up to BioShock Infinite, known as BioShock Infinite. There’s a lot riding on this title, and while it could potentially redefine the acclaimed series with a stunning comeback, there’s also a chance it might not meet expectations set by its predecessor.

A Cloud Chamber studio was established with the primary purpose of continuing the development of the popular series, BioShock, in a similar manner to how 343 Industries was founded to ensure the longevity of Halo.

Given that the last installment in the series was BioShock Infinite, it’s inevitable for audiences to draw comparisons between it and a potential BioShock 4 when it is eventually unveiled. Infinite, despite being developed by the same creator (Ken Levine) as the initial games, seems quite distinct from its predecessors, with some viewers deeming this departure as a positive shift, while others argue that the absence of the immersive sim and horror aspects found in the Rapture games makes it less engaging. As we wait to see what influences BioShock 4 may draw from these debates, one central narrative element could serve as the foundation for its creative decisions.

BioShock 4’s Protagonist Will, One Way or the Other, Be a Response to Booker DeWitt

DeWitt Is a Unique and Compelling Leading Man

BioShock and its sequel took rather unconventional approaches with their protagonists:

  • BioShock stars Jack, a brainwashed tool of Frank Fontaine and Andrew Ryan’s illegitimate child.
  • BioShock 2 stars Subject Delta, the first Big Daddy to be successfully bonded to a Little Sister.

In both instances, BioShock challenges the notion of a typical main character, delving into themes of free will and self-governance. When Booker DeWitt, traditionally portrayed as a heroic male figure, appeared in BioShock Infinite, some might have been dismayed by what seemed like a simplification of the BioShock narrative structure. However, as the story of Infinite unfolds, it becomes evident that Booker is not your run-of-the-mill action hero like John McClane or Indiana Jones; instead, his connection to free will proves to be just as intricate and layered as those in previous stories. By turning him into a more complex and identifiable character than the protagonists preceding him, BioShock Infinite establishes Booker DeWitt as an extraordinarily memorable hero.

Booker DeWitt Could Be Hard to Top in BioShock 4

In my perspective, BioShock 4 seems poised at a critical juncture regarding its protagonist’s development. It could opt to follow the path of the initial installments, with a mute and somewhat eerie central figure, or it might expand upon the character dynamics introduced by Booker DeWitt in more recent games. If Cloud Chamber aims to propel the series forward instead of rehashing old themes, I believe their strategy will lean towards the latter approach.

However, this situation brings up an intriguing query: how might the studio enhance the character of Booker DeWitt? In the previous games, Booker was a development of the archetypes presented, with his rough charm and stereotypical masculinity serving to distract from the unusual nature of his mission. Since this trick has already been employed, Cloud Chamber would find it challenging to repeat it.

Surely, it’s possible that BioShock 4 might choose to focus only on superficial character development and not delve into deeper themes using its protagonist, but such a choice would undoubtedly leave fans wanting more in various ways. It’s not unimaginable, by any stretch, but creating a protagonist as compelling as Booker DeWitt or the leads of the original BioShock games is no small feat indeed.
