BioShock Movie Producer Finally Gives an Update on the Film’s Release Window

The BioShock movie is still being made and could come out around the same time as the next BioShock video game, BioShock 4, according to the film’s producer. Fans have been hoping for a movie version of the popular first-person shooter for over ten years, and although there hasn’t been much news recently, it seems like progress is being made. While details about the BioShock movie are still limited, the people involved are eager to finish it and share it with audiences.

The news about a BioShock movie first surfaced in early 2022. Initially, all fans knew was that it would be a full-length film based on the first game, not a TV show. Since then, we’ve learned Francis Lawrence, the director of The Hunger Games films, is directing, and Michael Green, who co-wrote Logan, is writing the screenplay. Details have been limited, but now we have a little more information.

Netflix and Take-Two ‘Are Very Anxious’ to Get BioShock Movie Out

Roy Lee, the film’s producer, recently confirmed to Collider that the BioShock movie is still in development. Netflix and Take-Two Interactive, the game’s publisher, are eager to release the film around the time of potential new BioShock game releases. This is the first positive news fans have received since the director mentioned in May 2025 that the movie was progressing well. While a change in leadership at Netflix initially caused some concern among fans – and following previous failed attempts to adapt the game for the screen – the project appears to be moving forward.

Lee recently shared that the BioShock movie is taking longer than expected due to Francis Lawrence’s busy schedule. Lawrence was heavily involved with 2025’s The Long Walk, and is now committed to Sunrise on the Reaping until at least September. However, once post-production on that Hunger Games prequel wraps up, he’s expected to immediately begin work on BioShock again. While fans might be disappointed by the delay, it’s good news that the project is still moving forward. Lawrence previously stated his intention to make a successful BioShock adaptation – one that avoids the pitfalls of other video game movies – suggesting he’s dedicated to creating a high-quality film, which hopefully will make the wait worthwhile.

It’s interesting that Netflix and Take-Two are aiming to release the film around the same time as a new game. While Lee mentioned “potential new incarnations,” which could mean a simple remake or a side story, it’s likely referring to BioShock 4. The BioShock series has already been remastered, and 2K has confirmed a fourth main game is in the works. Current reports suggest BioShock 4 might not be released until mid-2027 at the earliest, so we shouldn’t expect many details about the movie for a while.

Although details are still limited, fans can be excited that a BioShock movie is moving forward. People have been trying to adapt the game into a film since 2008, but issues with funding and development have always stalled progress. It seems the new Netflix version might finally succeed. While a mid-2027 release is still a ways off, it’s encouraging that Netflix and Take-Two are committed to the project.
