BioWare Confirms Mass Effect 5 Feature and Issues Statement on Shepard’s TV Series Status

BioWare has confirmed that the next Mass Effect game will include romance options, and they’ve suggested there will be a good number of them. This news came from a company leader who also shared some updates about the upcoming Mass Effect TV series.

The next major installment in the Mass Effect sci-fi RPG series was first announced in December 2020. As of February 2025, BioWare’s Michael Gamble confirmed the game was still being developed, though it remained in the early planning stages.

Romance Options Are Returning in Mass Effect 5

In a recent post celebrating N7 Day, BioWare’s Gamble confirmed that Mass Effect 5 is still being developed. He didn’t say if the game had moved past the planning stages, but hinted it’s still early in production. Gamble mentioned the team has a lot of work ahead of them, including building out the game’s universe, features, and, notably, its romance options. While he stated the post doesn’t reveal any specific details about the game, the mention of romances suggests the new Mass Effect will continue the series’ tradition of offering players meaningful relationships.

Mass Effect Is BioWare’s Sole Focus Right Now

Sources say the team behind Mass Effect was briefly moved to work on finishing Dragon Age: The Veilguard after that game faced several restarts. This shift apparently caused some tension within BioWare, though the company hasn’t commented publicly. Now, BioWare’s general manager, Gamble, has confirmed that the team is fully dedicated to the next Mass Effect game and isn’t working on anything else.

Amazon’s Mass Effect TV Series Will Tell an Original Story

The executive also discussed the Mass Effect TV series Amazon revealed a year ago. He confirmed the show will feature a brand new story within the familiar Mass Effect universe. It will take place after the events of Mass Effect 3, and the writers carefully considered how it would fit with the existing storyline. Ultimately, they decided not to retell Commander Shepard’s adventure. “That story belongs to you,” Gamble explained.

The Mass Effect TV series won’t simply retell the story of Commander Shepard. That story belongs to you, the player!

Because player decisions have a big impact on the characters and even Commander Shepard’s gender is customizable, recent comments suggest the upcoming TV show might take place long after the events of Mass Effect 3. Perhaps Shepard is now a legendary figure, or simply a memory. This would be similar to Mass Effect: Andromeda, which was set over 600 years after the original games.

Amazon’s TV Show Likely Coming Before Mass Effect 5

As a huge Mass Effect fan, I was really excited to see a listing pop up suggesting they’re planning to start filming the TV series in late 2026! Considering how long these big, effects-driven shows take to make – usually between a year and a year and a half from filming to release – it looks like we might actually see the first season as early as 2028. That’s fantastic news, and it potentially means the show will be out well before Mass Effect 5, which doesn’t seem likely to arrive anytime this decade anyway.

Because big-budget games now take about five years to develop, and Mass Effect 5 is still in early stages as of mid-2025, it’s unlikely to be released before 2030. This means it will probably launch on the next generation of consoles, although it’s still possible it could also come out on current consoles.
