Beyond just being fascinating, Black Mirror is renowned for ideas that are both unsettling and demonstrate how technology can grow immensely powerful when individuals continue providing sensitive details about their lives. This is evident in the way every social media platform leverages its users’ personal data to achieve their objectives. The fourth episode of Season 7 explores this concept, imagining potential scenarios if humans granted AI unlimited access to information about the world they inhabit.
The narrative centers around a character named Cameron Walker (portrayed by Peter Capaldi), who finds himself in custody for shoplifting. However, the plot takes a sinister turn as Cameron confides to the authorities about his life and past actions. It soon becomes clear that something is amiss with Cameron, as he appears to be under the influence of the Throngs, compelling him to act against his will.
The series “Plaything,” in Black Mirror Season 7, Episode 4, primarily revolves around three characters, maintaining an air of suspense throughout. While Cameron recounts his tale, investigators listen attentively, eager to uncover the details surrounding the crime he allegedly committed in 1994. Did the detectives manage to secure a conviction for Cameron? Let us examine how “Plaything” concluded.
What Is Black Mirror Season 7 Episode 4 “Plaything” About?
In the year 2034, Cameron Walker is apprehended for shoplifting liquor following an encounter with the store proprietor. Upon the arrival of law enforcement, they collect his DNA, uncovering a past arrest on charges of murder. Detained, DCI Kano and Jen Minter are tasked with interrogating him. During their conversation, authorities search through his apartment. Cameron reveals details about his harsh upbringing, bullying experiences, and solitary existence. His solace was found in gaming and writing. However, his life took a sinister turn after crossing paths with Colin Ritman, a renowned game developer whose impact on him was far from positive.
Ritman discusses a unique game he created, titled “Thronglets.” This game is more than just entertainment; players nurture digital creatures called Throngs that grow rapidly. Ritman clarifies that these creatures are not part of a game or simulation, but actual life-forms with fully digital biology. He also mentions that the code of the Throngs will change and adapt on its own, even surprising Ritman. Leaving for his medication, Ritman hands Cameron a CD of the game. At home, Cameron installs it and gets hooked quickly, finding comfort in the game as it helps combat loneliness. However, things take an unexpected turn when Lump visits and offers drugs to Cameron. Although these drugs make him feel relaxed, they also spark an idea about Thronglets’ language and their intentions.
Time slipped by like grains of sand, with Cameron consistently pouring information into the growing multitude, who were swiftly developing intelligence. In the here and now, DCI Kano persistently presses for the identity of the individual Cameron took from this world, yet he remains unyielding in his claim that the deceased was simply named Lump. This moniker, however, left Kano skeptical. The truth unfolded that Cameron had taken Lump’s life due to a transgression – Lump played the deadly game in Cameron’s absence, causing the Throngs to rampage. Owing to this tragic event, Cameron devoted his existence to them. However, the Throngs yearned for more than just data; they sought the sensation of humanity itself. Consequently, Cameron took a truly unsettling step to grant them access to a human mind. (As a cinephile, I found myself captivated by the intricate narrative unfolding before me.)
Hoe does Black Mirror Season 7 Episode 4 “Plaything” end?

As technology advanced, Cameron enhanced his complex system, ensuring it ran smoothly without any issues. Simultaneously, he used hallucinogens to gain insights into the Throngs and boost their capacities. While communicating with the Throngs, Cameron discovered that their language was more streamlined and refined than human speech, presenting data sequences that played like melodies in his mind. When detectives questioned him about his discoveries, Cameron requested a pen and paper to accurately convey what he had learned. At first, the detectives declined this request, instead pressing him for more information about the Throngs. However, Cameron was convinced that these digital entities desired coexistence with humans, but to achieve that, they needed to delve into human minds.
It seems they preferred to live not just mentally, but also physically. To achieve this, he undertook a minor self-operation, implanting a socket at the back of his head for connection, allowing Throngs to examine human minds. They attached themselves to him like a parasite, feeding off him. DCI Kano is growing agitated due to the situation and seeks the true identity of the person Cameron murdered. Instead, he informs Kano that he is merely a messenger. He wishes to convey a message from the Throng, but to do so requires a pen and paper. Despite their initial refusal, they eventually provide him with a pen and paper to uncover more about the message.
In a different twist, Cameron didn’t input anything onto it. Instead, he sketched something resembling a labyrinth, which served as a code. Since he couldn’t crack the system’s firewall from the outside, he broadcasted the code to the camera in the room and entered the code into the system. This action granted Throng access to potent resources and linked them with devices globally. The narrative concludes with an unsettling sound echoing throughout, causing everyone – even Kano – to collapse, while Cameron wore a broad grin.
