The popular Netflix series, “Black Mirror“, has returned for its seventh season, with stories that delve deeper into personal experiences than ever before. In the initial episode, we witnessed an individual taking drastic measures to rescue a loved one, using technology as a means of restoring them to normalcy. Yet, what transpires when this technology begins to negatively impact your own life? These are among the thought-provoking questions posed during the opening episode. Conversely, Episode 2 explores emotions that are particularly resonant with young adults.
As a movie reviewer, I found myself immersed in the gripping tale that unfolds in the second episode of Black Mirror Season 7, titled “Bete Noire.” The narrative revolves around two intriguing characters, Maria and Verity, who share a past as former high school classmates. While Maria enjoyed popular status, Verity was often bullied and the subject of a malicious rumor about an affair with one of their teachers. Their lives diverged for several years until fate contrived to bring them back together, this time under a cloud of tension, suspicion, and unresolved history.
At first glance, their reunion seemed innocuous, but as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Maria would soon face devastating consequences. Let’s delve into how “Bete Noire” concludes.
What is Black Mirror Season 7 Episode 2 ‘Bete Noire’ about?

The story unfolds around Maria, played by Siena Kelly, who is employed at a confectionery firm called Ditta. She encounters Verity Greene (Rosy McEwen), a former classmate from high school. Not long after, Verity joins the same company as Maria, and events start to take a turn for the worse in Maria’s life.
Initially, an instance arises where Maria expresses her concern that something isn’t right. This occurs during a conversation between Verity and one of their coworkers about various food places, when the coworker mentions enjoying fast-food chicken from Bernie’s. As they talk, Maria listens in and corrects them, stating that the place is actually Barnie’s, not Bernie’s. Verity disagrees and insists it was Bernie’s. Maria is quite certain it was Barnie’s because her partner once worked there before it closed down, and he used to wear a cap with Barnie’s logo on it. Despite their differing opinions, they decide to settle the matter by looking up the restaurant’s name online.
In disbelief, Maria discovers that Barnie’s Chicken, as she knew it, doesn’t exist on Google, but Bernie’s Chicken does, bearing the same logo she had described. Matters escalate when she finds a cap with “Bernie’s” written on it in her apartment. To make things worse, an old photograph from high school shows her and her friends, including Natalie Caine. Maria sends a text to Natalie but receives no response.
In my own words, I’d express it like this: As a devoted fan of Ditta’s innovative offerings, I had the pleasure of witnessing our CEO’s visit to our office where he sampled some new products. He seemed particularly fond of the Hucklebuck and couldn’t hide his affection for the Doubloon. Later, Maria shared with him that the Doubloon contained seaweed-based gelatin, but after he departed, the head chef disclosed that it was actually beef gelatin we were using. This revelation upset our office head, as Ditta is a Hindu company. Maria vehemently asserted she had mentioned “carrageenan,” but the chef claimed Verity’s email failed to specify this detail. When everyone re-examined Verity’s message, it was confirmed that Maria had indeed only written about “non-pork gelatin.” Although Maria remained composed throughout the ordeal, she was gently reminded not to raise her voice. However, upon double-checking the email, it turned out that Maria had made an error in her recollection.
At home, Natalie gets a text from someone claiming to be her, but the message contained devastating news – that it was actually her husband sending the message, revealing she had taken her own life. Stricken with disbelief, she dials the number and inquires about various things, primarily if he knew anything about a girl named Verity. Her questioning became increasingly frantic, causing Natalie’s husband to terminate the call abruptly.
How Does Black Mirror Season 7 Episode 2 End?

The following day, upon entering the office, Maria notices everyone is absent, prompting her to brew a cup of coffee from our office’s coffee maker. A short while later, Verity comes into the office and informs her about the team meeting, which took Maria by surprise since she hadn’t received an email. Upon learning this, Verity inquired if Maria had any issues with her, and also disclosed past instances of bullying that occurred during high school. Verity explained the origins of a harmful rumor that circulated at school and its devastating impact on her.
The interaction concludes with Verity retrieving another coworker’s almond milk from the refrigerator, consuming it, and carelessly discarding the container on the floor. Upon entering the office, this almond milk enthusiast finds the empty carton on the ground, causing quite a commotion. Maria claims that Verity drank the milk, which angers Verity who retorts that it was actually Maria who did so. After examining the security footage, they discover to their surprise that indeed Maria had taken the carton from Verity and consumed its contents.
After work, she trails Verity to her residence, which turns out to be a grand mansion. Without permission, she forces entry and discovers large server cabinets in one of the rooms. She manages to sneak into Verity’s bedroom and locates the pendant she was seeking. However, Verity becomes aware of her presence and confronts her. At last, Verity reveals that she’s developed technology allowing her to control anything with a tiny remote. When Maria mentions having her own remote, Verity dismisses it casually as she has numerous others in reserve.
During the discussion, it comes to light that Maria was responsible for spreading the rumor concerning Verity and her teacher, while Natalie disclosed this information to Verity. Verity admits that it took her five weeks to manipulate Natalie, but only five days to manipulate Maria. In a dramatic turn of events, Verity alters the situation by contacting the police and handing a kitchen knife to Maria, suggesting Maria was there to attack her. However, things take an unexpected turn when Maria seizes a gun from one of the officers and fatally shoots Verity. Lastly, she uses the remote control to command the police officers, asserting they now work for her.
At the end, she’s depicted as a queen, with everyone else paying homage, suggesting that following Verity, it was Maria who was poised to leverage that technology.
