As a seasoned traveler and warrior hailing from the mystical lands of ancient China, I’ve faced my fair share of formidable foes – but none quite like this Keeper fellow! His tricks and tactics are as diverse as they come, from summoning orbs that can make even the sturdiest of us quiver in fear to calling upon a giant Yin-Yang Fish that’s as big as Bajie himself!
In the fifth chapter of Black Myth: Wukong, the Guardian of the Flaming Peaks assumes the role of the mid-chapter boss. Equipped with various spells, this character initiates combat by transporting the Chosen One and Bajie into a unique dimension that he has conjured up. Escape from this ghostly battlefield is only possible if the Guardian or you are defeated.
Following the summoning of the battlefield, the Flame Mountain’s Guardian launches an assault on the Destined One and Bajie with a mix of spells and attacks, prompting players in ‘Black Myth: Wukong’ to skillfully dodge and retaliate if they aim to vanquish him. Despite appearing to be defeated, he conceals one more surprise: the Yin-Yang Fish.
Preparations
Before engaging in battles with the Keeper of Flaming Mountains and the Yin-Yang Fish, it would be wise to activate the Azure Dust transformation. This transformation aids in enduring the boss’ barrage of projectiles and has the ability to stun them with its attacks. Don’t forget to use the Immobilize Spell and Pluck of Many for dealing massive damage in a short span, as long as you immobilize the enemy in a location that allows you to attack. Cloud Step can be beneficial for creating some distance and an opportunity to heal, particularly against the Yin-Yang Fish, while Rock Solid is effective against the Fish’s melee attacks; use it to parry and counterattack if you manage to time it correctly.
The Keeper of Flaming Mountains
In the opening of the battle, The Keeper will mysteriously materialize near the Chosen One. If you don’t swiftly step aside, he’ll initiate a grabbing move, raising the Chosen One before violently throwing them down. Since he employs magic for this action, signals that he’s about to grab are quite discreet (a subtle hand gesture and a brief flash of luminescent blue light). Following an unsuccessful grab, you’ll have a brief window to inflict some damage on him, but be mindful of his counterattack. He will transform into streaks of light that scatter, only to reappear at a distance away. When he reemerges, the scattered light bolts will homing in on you, so maneuver through them or to the side as they approach to evade injury.
Get ready to move sideways as the Keeper levitates and a Yin-Yang symbol emerges around him. Shortly after the symbol appears, he’ll extend his arm and shoot a cluster of bolts at you. It’s better to dodge towards him to avoid these. When his hand begins to glow ominously and he brings it near his chest, dark orbs will erupt from the water around us. To dodge these, move away as he waves his hand. The orbs can cause harm if you walk into them, so maintain a safe distance and try to lead him towards a more open section of the arena before resuming your attack.
Phase 2
When the Guardian’s health drops to half, he unleashes a fresh strategy. He floats aloft, shooting bursts of both radiant and dark energy in every direction, creating a circular spread. The ensuing entities mirror the color of the bolt that spawned them – white ones employ melee combat, while black ones are equipped with bows. Eliminate the ranged adversaries first for an easier battle. With all summoned foes vanquished, the Guardian will return to the ground, giving you another opportunity to strike him. He can also generate a horde of white orbs (reminiscent of his Phase 1 black orb attack and using the same visual cue) from the ground, which rise into the sky before firing beams downward moments later. Ensure you’re not standing beneath any of them to avoid getting hit.
When the Guardian’s health dwindles significantly, he’ll levitate once more, conjuring a spectral steed, the Yaoguai Horse, to engage you instead. Vanquishing this steed will conclude the battle with the Guardian. The Yaoguai Horse exhibits several attack patterns using its whip, such as a charging shoulder barge followed by an overhead strike, and a swift three-hit combo that sweeps its whip ahead. Evade these attacks and capitalize on the ease of staggering the Yaoguai Horse with powerful strikes, and you’ll bring the battle to a swift end. Regrettably, the Guardian has one last surprise in store.
The Yin-Yang Fish
Following his victory over the summoned horse named Guai, the Guardian chooses to summon the “Yin-Yang Fish” to consume you instead. This fish expands to a colossal size, engulfing Bajie in the process and leaving him out of the ensuing battle.
The Yin-Yang Fish has the ability to deliver a powerful tail strike when it rises upward, making it crucial to dodge left or right as the tail descends. Additionally, be prepared to dodge in either direction after it spouts water from its mouth. Following a successful dodge, there will be an opportunity for a counterattack; however, the fish’s agility allows it to escape before sustained combat.
When the fish is far away, it performs a tail-slam or jumps high into the air before crashing down. Maintain a safe distance when it leaps to prevent getting struck and prepare to evade towards it following its landing as well, since it often follows with a tailspin that hurls objects at you. It can also charge at you, swiftly moving through the water, but like many of its previous attacks, it can be dodged by moving or rolling sideways. Be wary when approaching from behind, for it may spin around and strike you with its tail. Another tactic it might employ is jumping into the air and using its tail to fling a projectile at you; however, if you’re vigilant for the incoming object, dodging to the side should allow you to completely avoid it.
One of the Yin-Yang Fish’s most dangerous attacks begins when it soars up into the air. It then spews out multiple dark orbs that, after a moment, begin homing in on the Destined One. You’ll need to dodge quickly and with precise timing to avoid taking damage here, though the Azure Dust transformation can be used to tank it while building up focus to counterattack instead. The Yin-Yang Fish can also “roar” and call orbs of light up out of the ground. These will damage you if you touch them, but serve no further purpose and can be avoided pretty easily.
When you reduce the health of the Yin-Yang Fish to zero, the Keeper will be defeated and the battle will conclude. As a reward, you’ll get a Celestial Ribbon, two rolls of Fine Golden Thread, and the Yin-Yang Daoist Robe. There’s an altar nearby where you can take the Loong Balm drink, too. Also, there’s a peaceful meditation spot close at hand.
