Black Myth: Wukong Pushed China’s Gaming Industry to New Heights in 2024

As a long-time gaming enthusiast who’s seen the industry evolve over the years, I must say that the growth of China’s video games market is nothing short of astounding! It’s like watching a mythical hero, Black Myth: Wukong himself, conquering new realms.

2024 saw a significant growth in China’s gaming industry revenue, with figures surging over 7.5% and reaching an impressive $44.8 billion. As a result, China now holds the title of the world’s second-biggest domestic video game market.

It’s primarily Black Myth: Wukong that has been driving the majority of growth this year. This game broke numerous sales records in 2024 when it was launched, marking China’s first AAA game. The captivating title, still a crowd favorite, was released back in August 2024.

Boosted Figures

Although China’s year-on-year growth in its video games industry might not be a record-breaking increase, it’s undeniably experiencing rapid expansion. In 2023, following the post-COVID resurgence, there was a 14% revenue growth. Despite this year’s growth rate being reduced by half compared to last, the overall value has significantly increased.

According to reports from the China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association based in Beijing, this news has been disseminated online via SCMP.com.

In a statement, the Chinese organisation said:

Over time, our home market has been consistently expanding, as innovative mobile games and standalone player titles have made significant strides in growth.

In China, there’s a thriving growth in mobile gaming as well. Statistics reveal that by 2024, up to three-quarters of the total earnings could be attributed to mobile games. Despite Black Myth: Wukong attracting a significant number of viewers both domestically and internationally, mobile games continue to reign supreme in China.

This year, it’s been estimated that even more Chinese citizens have taken up gaming, with over 670 million people nationwide now participating in various forms of video gaming.
