As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the intricate worlds of FromSoftware’s Soulsborne games, I must say, the anticipation for Black Myth: Wukong is palpable. The positive review scores have only fueled my excitement for this upcoming action-RPG that promises to bring a fresh take on the Journey to the West tale.

In a recent roundup, critiques for the forthcoming action-RPG “Black Myth: Wukong” – an adaptation of the classic Journey to the West – have been overwhelmingly positive. This eagerly awaited game is slated for release on August 20.

In its debut as China’s initial AAA game from Game Science, Black Myth: Wukong invites gamers to assume the character of the Monkey King and embark on his renowned journey westward. The developer has recently unveiled the final trailer, highlighting the Monkey King’s iconic transformations as well as numerous bosses.

As a dedicated gamer with years of experience under my belt, I was thrilled when the new benchmarking tool went live on Steam earlier this week. This tool has become an essential part of my gaming routine, as it allows me to test my system’s performance and fine-tune settings for an optimized gameplay experience. With its user-friendly interface and intuitive design, I find myself spending less time fiddling with settings and more time immersed in the games themselves. It’s a game changer for gamers like me who value smooth, seamless performance and want to get the most out of their hardware.

However, the crucial factor that completes the anticipation before a game launch is undeniably the review ratings. For Black Myth: Wukong, these scores have now been released, and they depict an encouraging scenario, showcasing Game Science’s interpretation of the Journey to the West. Here you can find a summary of reviews from various prominent publishers

Publication Review Score
Gamingbolt 100/100
Hardcore Gamer 9/10
PC Gamer 87/100
PCGamesN 80/100
IGN 8/10
DOT Esports 80/100
TopMob 4/5
GameRant 3/5
TechRadar 3/5

It looks like the game Black Myth: Wukong is set to join the impressive collection of games in the soul-like genre that weren’t created by FromSoftware, who are known for pioneering this style. Despite being frequently categorized as a soul-like game, Black Myth: Wukong seems to offer gameplay experiences closer to classic action-adventure games, rather than strictly adhering to the soul-like formula.

For dedicated soulslike enthusiasts, Black Myth: Wukong could be a letdown, but it still challenges players to decipher an enemy’s movement patterns and attacks, incorporating fundamental mechanics common in soulslike games.

In his assessment, Joshua Robertson from TopMob states that this game is the “most refined, complex, and enjoyable souls-like title outside of FromSoftware’s collection, even with its flaws.”

Black Myth: Wukong Is An Action Game With Souls-like Inspirations

Black Myth: Wukong Review Scores Point to Potential GOTY Material

As a passionate fan, I can confidently say that Black Myhth: Wukong is sure to resonate with those who enjoy souls-like games, primarily due to its emphasis on intense boss battles. Yet, it’s important to note that one aspect often cherished by the genre – an interconnected level design, which allows for exploration and uncovering shortcuts as rewards – seems to be absent in this title.

According to the feedback, the Chinese legend-themed action-adventure games with firearms seem to feature a more linear level structure, allowing players ample space to discover new places. However, the absence of a map in these games can make exploration somewhat challenging or frustrating for critics.

From the feedback, it’s clear that Game Science aimed to blend a classic action-adventure style with influences from Chinese folklore and elements reminiscent of “Soulsborne” games, rather than strictly replicating a pure “Soulsborne” experience like “Lies of P” did so effectively last year.

Based on feedback from players, it appears that the developer has met their goal with this game, although they have faced criticism regarding the game’s layout and the absence of a map.

It’s important to mention that this game doesn’t have a review score lower than 75, with only one exception – Dalton Cooper of GameRant, who rated it 3 out of 5. He stated that the game isn’t the best in its genre, but it also doesn’t fall into the category of the worst games following in the footsteps of Dark Souls.

In Black Myth: Wukong, you’ll find it has a strong review average with an 88 on OpenCritic and 83 on Metacritic. Fans of the genre or the novel will have the opportunity to experience the Journey to the West when the game launches on PC and PlayStation 5 on August 20th.
