As a long-time gamer and enthusiast of Chinese mythology, I can’t help but feel a mix of amusement and exasperation when it comes to games like Wukong Sun: Black Legend. It’s Christmas season, and instead of spreading joy, some developers seem more interested in cashing in on the hype surrounding blockbuster games.
In just two more days, it’s Christmas! Many amazing video games are currently discounted, and there’s an exciting plan to delight a cherished one by purchasing the latest role-playing game based on the Monkey King mythology for them as a gift.
Happy Christmas, dear Timmy! I’ve got you a copy of “Wukong Sun: Black Legend” for your Nintendo Switch, as you requested. Enjoy!
In a purely imaginary turn of events, there’s a strong likelihood that such an event will occur multiple times, given that an ambiguously designed game surfaced in the Nintendo Switch store.
As a passionate gamer, I find myself immersed in the captivating world of “Wukong Sun: Black Legend“, a 2D platformer that boasts an art style reminiscent of those intriguing, if somewhat relentless, mobile game advertisements.
The fundamental issue between “Wukong Sun: Black Legend” and “Black Myth: Wukong” lies in their cover arts, which are strikingly similar, even though the games underneath have distinct differences.
Currently, the release date for “Wukong Sun” is set for December 26th (Boxing Day), in contrast to “Black Myth: Wukong”, which was already launched back in August.
The Holiday Copycat Classic
As a passionate gamer, I must admit that many games out there shy away from blatantly mimicking their sources like Wukong Sun does, but it’s certainly not the first game to adopt such an approach.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that during the holiday season, it’s common to see developers releasing new titles that resemble existing ones. This seems to be a strategy aimed at those who might be buying games online for the first time as they search for the ultimate Christmas gift for their gaming-loving loved ones.
In my perspective as a fan, I’d like to clarify that Black Myth Wukong isn’t an exclusive property of Game Science. Instead, it’s deeply rooted in the rich narrative of Journey to the West, a classic 16th-century Chinese novel from the Ming dynasty.
In various video games, the legendary character, Sun Wukong (The Monkey King), has been featured, such as “Monkey King: Hero Reborn” which hit the market in 2019, coinciding with the release of an animated movie bearing the same name.
Other games modeled after Journey to the West usually don’t rival the 2024 adaptation in terms of production quality, but they possess a unique artistic flair and gameplay mechanics that set them apart, avoiding any underhanded strategies.
In case you need a refresher: if someone asks for the Monkey King game, you should recommend Black Myth: Wukong. Although it didn’t win Game of the Year, it’s no place for imitators to take away its sales by being lackadaisical.
