According to Feng Ji, the CEO of Game Science, while progress on the game “Black Myth: Wukong” has temporarily paused in favor of developing “Black Myth: Zhong Kui,” the story of Sun Wukong is not finished just yet. The team will begin anew with “Black Myth: Zhong Kui” and revisit “Black Myth: Wukong” eventually, though the specifics – whether it’s an expansion or a follow-up game – remain undecided at this point.
Despite the anticipation among fans of Black Myth: Wukong for an expansion to be unveiled at Gamescom Opening Night Live, what was actually showcased was a first glimpse into another Black Myth title – Black Myth: Zhong Kui. Though specifics about this upcoming game are limited, it has been confirmed to be a standalone action RPG for PC and current consoles, set to release at a future date. Similar to Sun Wukong, Zhong Kui is a deity from Chinese mythology. Geoff Keighley, the host of Gamescom Opening Night Live, described Zhong Kui as a “spirit-catching deity who roams between the realms of Hell and Earth.
The Story of Sun Wukong Is Not Over Yet
Fans of Black Myth can look forward to learning about the origins of Zhong Kui and the factors that influenced his character design. Meanwhile, Game Science has expressed an openness to exploring Sun Wukong’s story further as well. According to MP1st, Game Science CEO Feng Ji shared on Weibo a behind-the-scenes account of the development process leading to Black Myth: Zhong Kui. Initially, plans called for post-launch DLC for Black Myth: Wukong, but during development, things shifted when Game Science co-founder Yang Qui suggested that Feng Ji would prefer working on a fresh project rather than additional content. Inspired by Yang Qui’s suggestion, Game Science subsequently created what is now known as Black Myth: Zhong Kui. In terms of the project’s development, Feng Ji stated, “We aim to have creative freedom, take risks, break free from conventional patterns, and start afresh.
