Black Ops 6 9/11 campaign mission rumors explained

Black Ops 6 9/11 campaign mission rumors explained

As a dedicated fan with over two decades of Call of Duty under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of amusement and disbelief at the whirlwind of rumors surrounding Black Ops 6 and the infamous 9/11 mission. It’s like we’ve all become modern-day Raiden from Metal Gear Solid, adept at deciphering coded messages and hidden symbols, but sometimes our detective skills can lead us astray.

Black Ops 6 is based on the Gulf War in the ’90s, but there were widespread beliefs about a mission that depicted the 9/11 events. However, these beliefs have been proven false by Treyarch. The question then arises as to why so many gamers thought it was genuine?

Over the years, the Call of Duty franchise has been involved in several debates due to some of its challenging missions, with the mission “No Russian” from 2009 being particularly noteworthy for causing a stir.

While this occasion was purely fictional, certain missions have drawn inspiration from actual historical events. For instance, the initial Black Ops game featured an attempted assassination of Fidel Castro, which echoes a real-life event, and MW19’s “Highway of Death” mirrors a significant area between Kuwait and Iraq, a conflict that resonates with many as being too reminiscent of real life.

References in Black Ops 6’s marketing convinced players there would be a 9/11 mission in the game so here’s a breakdown of how these rumors spread and their debunking.

Where did the Black Ops 6 9/11 rumors come from?

The whispers started swirling when Black Ops 6 and its emblem were initially unveiled, as astute players noticed “2001” and what seems to be “/1” on the main image of the blog post. Some members of the community then speculated that the complete sequence might be “2001/11/9” – the date of the September 11 incidents.

Besides this, a hint towards Black Ops 6 was subtly incorporated within Warzone, with special emphasis on a specific date. The submarine found in the Rebirth Island map offers several clues about Black Ops 6, and a computer screen inside displays “911” prominently in red.

As a gaming enthusiast, I noticed some gamers interpreting the promotional material for Black Ops 6 in the New York Post as potential clues suggesting a connection to the September 11th events.

The rumors about potential spoilers for Call of Duty spread rapidly on their social media platforms, leading some to believe that the events of 9/11 might appear in Black Ops 6. However, it’s important to note that “leak” is not always synonymous with “rumor,” but these misconceptions were widespread.

Treyarch debunks 9/11 mission rumors

Regarding all the whispers and conjecture, Treyarch has made it clear that there will not be a mission related to September 11th in Black Ops 6.

At a Q&A session held in June, PC Gamer noted that Treyarch’s Director of Production, Yale Miller, responded “No” and clarified that the statement was just a rumor when asked about a certain topic.

In his statement, Associate Design Director Matt Scronce clarified that “Black Ops 6, similar to all other Black Ops titles, is entirely a work of fiction.”

During a meeting that CharlieIntel was invited to, Treyarch clarified, “We’re not aiming to be sensationalistic for the sake of it; rather, our inspiration comes from real-world events, and we handle such subjects with due respect.”

Contrary to some online speculation, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will not incorporate the events of 9/11 in any fashion whatsoever. The developers at Treyarch are not seeking to provoke but rather draw inspiration from real-life occurrences while giving due consideration to such sensitive subjects.

So there you have it, straight from the horse’s mouth, 9/11 won’t feature in Black Ops 6.

It wouldn’t make sense anyway

Apart from being potentially too contentious for Activision (now owned by Microsoft), such a 9/11 mission in their game would not align with the storyline of the game either.

Black Ops 6’s campaign takes place during the early ’90s, well before the 9/11 incident. Characters from 2001, such as George W. Bush and Saddam Hussein, appeared in a live-action trailer, but BO6 is centered around the Gulf War, which concluded in 1991.

Black Ops 6 follows up on the events of both Black Ops Cold War and certain missions set in the 1980s from Black Ops 2. However, it also reintroduces the traditional Zombies mode that players love, further expanding the Dark Aether narrative.
