As a long-time fan of the Call of Duty series, I must admit that my heart skips a beat every time a new title is announced. However, with the latest revelations about Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, it seems like the franchise has taken a step back in terms of its single-player campaigns.
Since it was first released in 2003, the Call of Duty series has undergone significant changes. The most noticeable shift is from being primarily a single-player game driven by story, with multiplayer serving as a secondary feature, to a multiplayer powerhouse where the campaign feels more like a demonstration.
The upcoming title, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, hits stores on October 25th. Notably, its promotional content emphasizes the use of real-life historical figures and the tumultuous aftermath of the Cold War.
It’s quite understandable to assume that a heavy dependence on history might lead somewhere promising. However, as Treyarch’s Creative Director Jon Zuk and Production Director Yale Miller have shared some insights about the campaigns, it seems less optimistic.
A surprising change for a Treyarch Black Ops game is that, for the first time, the campaign will lead to just a single conclusion.
Earlier versions, such as the latest “Black Ops Cold War” campaign, allowed the player a degree of control. The multiple endings enhanced the games’ replay value by making the short stories more engaging.
As per the statements from top officials, the upcoming campaign is expected to be somewhat longer than ‘Black Ops Cold War’, yet it will still adhere to the traditional duration of a ‘Call of Duty’ game. The ‘Black Ops Cold War’ campaign clocked in at around 5-6 hours, and given its intriguing narrative, this length was particularly dissatisfying for many players.
The campaigns for the Call of Duty games have been growing less memorable, and this includes the reimagined Modern Warfare series as well. Regrettably, the latest installment in the series didn’t leave a lasting impression last year.
Alone in the Shooter World
Single-player fans’ discontent may not significantly impact Activision’s creative path since each release consistently sells millions of copies predominantly for multiplayer purposes.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that I tend to gravitate more towards story-driven games. Even at its multiplayer peak, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare left an indelible mark on the public imagination not just because of its intense multiplayer battles, but also due to the gripping narrative starring Captain Price and memorable campaign missions like ‘All Ghillied Up’ and ‘No Russian’. If they don’t keep this story-focused approach in mind, the Call of Duty franchise might find itself losing ground.
It appears that rival games are following suit, as the forthcoming “Battlefield” suggests a campaign similar to “Battlefield 3”, and “Delta Force” is returning with a remake of the “Black Hawk Down” campaign from “Delta Force”.
