Black Ops 6 is both the John Wick and Mission: Impossible game I’ve always wanted

As someone who grew up binge-watching Mission: Impossible movies and losing countless hours to John Wick marathons, Black Ops 6’s gameplay reveal at gamescom 2024 left me positively thrilled! The blend of espionage and brutal combat feels like a perfect fusion of two action-packed worlds that I hold dear.

At this year’s gamescom 2024, we finally had a chance to see the campaign gameplay for Black Ops 6, and it was an exciting mix of espionage-style antics reminiscent of Mission: Impossible, combined with the intense yet stylish combat found in John Wick.

The storyline strongly resembles that of Mission: Impossible – it’s been revealed that an enigmatic group has secretly infiltrated the CIA, casting suspicion on our main characters as traitors. In response, they’ve formed a covert unit to uncover the facts behind this mysterious situation.

The adventure we witnessed at gamescom unfolds like a traditional espionage tale, where the player sneaks into a glamorous gathering, interacts with influential figures, and employs technology more advanced than what was available in the early ’90s. It may seem unrealistic, but fans of MI would expect nothing less.

True to the style of classic Call of Duty games, the situation swiftly spirals into pandemonium, prompting characters to pull out their firearms. Remarkably, Black Ops 6 masterfully shifts from a Mission: Impossible vibe to a John Wick-like atmosphere.

In one sequence, there’s a slow-motion combat taking place in a kitchen reminiscent of John Wick movies, where the player is given the choice to either deliver a punch to an attacker’s throat or strike them with a chopping board, followed by submerging their head into a boiling fryer.

As a gamer, it’s not often that hand-to-hand fights in first-person shooters are satisfyingly executed. However, when developers introduce quick-time events that allow some control without just mindlessly punching or clubbing an NPC with my gun, it’s a refreshing change I appreciate. I’m looking forward to more of these intense, stylish encounters as they’ve been implemented so far.

In Black Ops 6, it’s not just about close-quarter fights; the innovative ‘omnimovement’ system is also introduced. This allows you to move, jump, or glide in any direction swiftly without losing speed, which reminds me of the high-energy gunfights from John Wick.

To truly embody the title character as an anti-hero, you’ll likely require a fair amount of skill at the game. However, after players get the hang of the missions, I envision some thrilling playthroughs as they breeze through with proficiency.

In simpler terms, Black Ops 6 promises another world-wide journey filled with typical Call of Duty elements such as driving tanks and firing miniguns from helicopters. However, the game’s excessive spy missions, high-speed vehicle pursuits, and intense close-combat action are designed to blend seamlessly two renowned Hollywood action series.
