As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia mixed with a twinge of disappointment upon hearing about Black Ops 6‘s decision to scrap large-scale maps at launch. My gaming journey has been punctuated by countless hours spent exploring expansive battlefields in games like Battlefield and Halo, and the thrill of strategic teamwork that such maps afforded.
Instead of including large-scale multiplayer modes at the initial release of Black Ops 6, Treyarch has chosen to focus on the classic 6vs6 gameplay and maps that are traditionally found in Call of Duty games, which fans will find comfortable and familiar.
In the upcoming Black Ops 6, you’ll find a variety of maps ranging from compact to moderately sized; however, you won’t encounter the extensive battlefields characteristic of game modes such as Ground War, Invasion, and Fireteam. This is due to the fact that there will be no large-scale map modes available at the game’s initial release.
In the unveiling of Call of Duty Next, developers shared their intention to focus on designing smaller and mid-sized maps for the multiplayer mode. They argue that the Omnimovement and game’s pace work optimally with these sized maps.
In Black Ops 6, you can expect to find sixteen distinct battlefield layouts, fourteen of which are regular maps, while four of them are specifically designed for intense, close-quarter combat reminiscent of the smaller arenas featured in the Gunfight mode from Modern Warfare 3. These compact Strike maps will provide a unique gaming experience.
On certain Strike maps, you can engage in the game Face Off. This playlist offers a variety of traditional 6v6 matches set on compact maps.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that maps like Strike and Face Off in Black Ops 6 truly embody the developers’ approach for this title. It seems they’re leaning more towards intense, up-close combat and swift maneuvers, rather than the tactical, slow-paced gameplay that larger map modes offered in previous games.
Initially, game modes such as Fireteam and Ground War won’t be available at the start, but don’t worry because they might still be introduced over time. It is expected that new game modes and maps will be added in periodic updates, so there is a chance we might see large map modes return later on.
In Warzone, a new Resurgence map called Area 99 is on its way, and it’s expected that the large map from Black Ops 6 will be released at some point during its cycle too. Since the maps for Modern Warfare 3’s Invasion and Ground War were parts of Urzikstan, it’s possible that we might see a similar setup in Black Ops 6 when the big Warzone map is finally released.
