Black Ops 6 Zombies is a Hit, But Its True Test is Just Around the Corner

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must say that Treyarch has truly outdone themselves with Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, particularly its Zombies mode. The launch maps have been a delightful throwback to the classic round-based experiences we’ve come to love, while still offering enough newness to keep things fresh.

The debut of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has been invigorating for the established series, as it’s managed to meet many of the high expectations set for its gameplay aspects before its release. Among its Zombies, campaign, and primary multiplayer offerings, it was the Zombies mode that seemed to have the most challenges ahead, given its history of contentious transformations in recent times.

As a thrilled enthusiast, I can confidently say that the initial foray into Zombies maps of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has been nothing short of spectacular, setting a promising tone for the latest version of this mode. These maps offer an enticing blend of compact and expansive gameplay experiences, making for an engaging start.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies Needs a Solid Plan For Season 2 and Beyond

Over time, the Zombies experience has solidified as a key element in the broader Call of Duty series, especially those games created by Treyarch. This mode made its debut within the IP as far back as 2008, with the launch of World at War. Since then, the engaging and diverse survival gameplay of Zombies has resonated strongly with fans, although more modern versions of the mode have departed from traditional mechanics and concepts.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve seen the shift in Zombies gameplay, starting with Cold War that moved away from the traditional round-based experiences towards open-world exploration, similar to what we’ve seen in Modern Warfare 3. This change has sparked quite a debate within the Zombies community ever since, with many of us longing for a return to the classic format before Black Ops 6’s Zombies mode was released.

Treyarch fulfilled expectations by introducing two launch zombie maps for Black Ops 6, Liberty Falls and Terminus, which both return to the traditional round-based gameplay style while hiding numerous Easter eggs for players to discover. Liberty Falls provides a tighter combat experience, while Terminus offers a mix of exploration with the tense atmosphere found in classic Zombies games. This diverse gameplay has made the zombie mode in Black Ops 6 quite popular so far. However, creating maps like these requires time, and the seasons for Call of Duty typically change every few months.

Black Ops 6 Zombies’ In-Between Content Will Be Just as Important as its Brand-New Maps

Despite the promise of ongoing variety with the Season 1 Reloaded update for Black Ops 6, which includes the addition of the Citadelle Des Morts map in Zombies mode, it’s reasonable to assume that this rapid development pace may not be sustainable based on past games’ post-release patterns. Given that a new Zombies map per in-game season might strain realistic expectations, there could potentially be a gap before another map is launched following Citadelle Des Morts. To maintain fan interest during this potential pause, additional fresh content will likely be necessary.

During these breaks, it might be beneficial for Treyarch to introduce community-oriented challenges related to global Zombie eliminations. These challenges could offer exclusive operator and even Wonder Weapon skins as rewards. Additionally, they could reintroduce limited-time modes similar to the Turned experience from Black Ops 2, or create small sections of larger maps functioning as Survival arenas like TranZit. In this way, Treyarch can keep players engaged with Zombies during periods without a new map release, preventing the latest iteration of Zombies from losing steam.
