As a seasoned Call of Duty player who’s been through my fair share of map redesigns and battle royale innovations, I can confidently say that Treyarch is cooking something special for us with Black Ops 6. The hints of World at War maps in the new game are more than just Easter eggs; they seem to be laying the groundwork for a grand tribute to the franchise’s rich history within the Warzone map.
Following an exceptionally successful debut weekend, it’s evident that the newly launched Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is poised for a promising future. The game has garnered widespread acclaim due to the bold shifts in direction it has made with its single-player storyline and core multiplayer, while simultaneously maintaining a traditional feel in its Zombies mode, which has been warmly received.
After gamers have become well-acquainted with the features of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 upon release, there’s growing excitement about the additional content that will be rolled out during the game’s post-launch phase. As standard multiplayer will receive new maps and modes once Black Ops 6 starts its in-game seasons, players are eager to discover how the battle royale mode, Warzone, will evolve within the Call of Duty universe. A hint at maps from 2008’s World at War can already be found in the multiplayer of Black Ops 6, giving fans a clue about what they might encounter in future updates for Warzone.
Treyarch’s Map History Will Seemingly Play a Big Part in the Future of Warzone
At its release, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 received acclaim for its innovative take on pre-launch multiplayer maps. The game boasted an impressive collection of 16 entirely new maps designed to captivate players. This refreshing approach was particularly anticipated due to the lack of originality in recent Call of Duty (CoD) titles, such as Modern Warfare 3, which only offered remakes of maps from Modern Warfare 2, first released in 2009.
Although the innovative design of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6‘s launch maps is commendable, they could benefit from a wider range and more traditional layouts. It appears that classic maps from Treyarch-led games may have a role to play in the future of Black Ops 6. Indeed, the fan-favorite map, Nuketown, was introduced in Black Ops 6 on November 1st, and it seems this might just be the beginning for older maps making a comeback in the franchise.
For example, fans have already discovered that the Courtyard map from World at War exists around the outskirts of Black Ops 6‘s Skyline multiplayer map. Some players initially thought that this indicated that remakes of classic Black Ops and World at War maps would come to Black Ops 6‘s multiplayer throughout its post-launch seasons, and while this could certainly happen, it seems as if Treyarch has even bigger plans for these past experiences.
Warzone’s Future Will Potentially Take Inspiration From Blackout in its Map Design
The exterior design of the Courtyard, adjacent to Skyline, has been modified to reflect the visual style of Avalon – a fictional Mediterranean city-state featured in the campaign of Black Ops 6. Interestingly, Skyline is set within Avalon as well, and rumors from significant leaks hint that Avalon may serve as the primary setting for the upcoming major map expansion in Call of Duty: Warzone. Based on the leaked images of the Avalon map, it seems that numerous popular maps from Treyarch’s previous projects will be incorporated as Points of Interest (POIs), with Courtyard being one of several classic locations reappearing.
In essence, the new battle royale game, Warzone, appears to follow a similar strategy as Blackout from Call of Duty’s Black Ops 4, which was a highly successful part of that year. The map for Blackout was created by combining popular maps from previous Black Ops games, and it seems that Warzone could be replicating this method in its design. It is likely that remade past maps will still be available as separate experiences within Black Ops 6’s multiplayer mode or even in Call of Duty 2025’s core gameplay, but there are strong indications that the next Warzone map will be a grand homage to the best aspects of Black Ops history.
