The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) franchise, which includes Black Panther, is highly cherished. The initial Black Panther film, featuring Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther, debuted in 2018 and became both a commercial and critical triumph, earning over $1.3 billion. Four years later, in 2022, the sequel, titled Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, also saw success. Given this, it’s not shocking that plans for a third movie have been made. Ryan Coogler, who directed the first two films, will be back to helm the third. There are whispers that an esteemed actor might join the cast of the upcoming MCU film.

On the recent episode of 7PM in Brooklyn featuring Carmelo Anthony, Coogler discussed Black Panther 3. The director revealed that Denzel Washington had been his ideal choice for the project since its inception because he wanted to collaborate with the Equalizer actor. Coogler expressed his admiration, stating, “I believe he’s the finest actor currently alive.” He further emphasized the significance of Washington within our culture, saying, “His impact is immeasurable.” Coogler has been in talks with Washington about the project for some time now, but was still taken aback when the Gladiator II actor mentioned it. He added:

For quite some time now, I’ve been discussing this matter with him, and I must admit I was taken aback when he brought it up. However, the fact that it resonates isn’t surprising in itself.

In November 2024, Washington made an appearance on The Today Show where he discussed his upcoming acting ventures. He casually mentioned that Ryan Coogler was writing a part specifically for him in Black Panther 3, which caused quite a stir and subsequently made headlines. Later, in an interview with Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast weeks after, Washington praised Coogler as a “genius” and admitted to calling the director to apologize for revealing his role in Black Panther prematurely. This wasn’t the first time Washington had expressed his desire to work with Coogler; he previously shared the same sentiments during an episode of Nightcap podcast on YouTube in March. Coogler himself has been eager to collaborate with Washington, expressing hope that they could bring their partnership to life. However, he suggested that the decision ultimately rested with the Tragedy of Macbeth star, as it would only come to fruition if he showed interest.

Ryan Coogler has shown a persistent interest in collaborating with Forest Whitaker, and his recent comments seem to confirm that Whitaker will indeed be involved in “Black Panther 3”. Coogler’s statement, which uses double negatives, actually implies a positive – it seems that Whitaker is open to working with the director because he praised Coogler, calling him a “genius”. Talented actors like Whitaker would undoubtedly jump at the chance to work with a filmmaker of Coogler’s skill. Furthermore, Whitaker’s discussion about his role in “Black Panther 3” suggests that he has already agreed to the part. In fact, he mentioned that Coogler was writing a role specifically for him in the next “Black Panther” film, and after that, he would film “Othello” and “King Lear” before retiring. Based on his words, it’s clear that the upcoming “Black Panther” movie is definitely scheduled on Whitaker’s calendar.
