In autumn of 2025, “The Black Phone 2” is set to hit theaters, making it a perfect watch around Halloween. After catching the trailer that just came out, I find myself even more curious about this sequel. Filming wrapped up in January and reintroduces the two primary young characters, now high school students. The story follows Finn (played by Mason Thames) and Gwen (Madeline McGraw), who are once again confronting the sinister antagonist known as The Grabber, portrayed by Ethan Hawke. Additionally, Demián Bichir joins the cast in this thrilling continuation.

Blumhouse is set to unveil a number of horror films in 2025, and I’m genuinely thrilled about the upcoming installment of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, given that the teaser showcases an eagerly awaited toy character. Moreover, I’m equally eager for The Black Phone 2. The chilling and skillfully produced trailer brings to mind two classic horror movies, and I can’t wait to see what unfolds next.

The Black Phone 2’s Trailer Is Dark & Scary Like A Nightmare On Elm Street & Sinister

Watching the preview for The Black Phone 2, it brought back memories of a couple of timeless horror films – A Nightmare on Elm Street and Sinister.

In his quest to find a solution against The Grabber yet again, Finn encounters characters similar to Ethan Hawke’s malevolent figures in his dreams. This resembles Freddy Krueger’s haunting and murderous acts in A Nightmare on Elm Street. Although I’d be thrilled for an Elm Street reboot, this seems like a fantastic alternative, with The Grabber’s sinister nature truly captivating me. While some horror villains have intricate backstories or even elicit sympathy, The Grabber’s kidnapping and killing of children makes a redemption arc impossible. I appreciate that the trailer for The Black Phone 2 suggests The Grabber’s spirit is tormenting Finn, enriching an already gripping narrative with an added layer of complexity.

Given that Scott Derrickson has directed both The Black Phone series and Sinister, it’s not hard to spot parallels between these chilling narratives, and I must admit, I admire their grim and grotesque undertones. As Finn delves further into the enigma of The Grabber, I found myself drawn back to Hawke’s character Ellison Oswalt from Sinister, a true crime writer who finds himself entangled in the malevolent forces that haunt his new residence. Just like Finn and Ellison, both characters share a thirst for knowledge and a determination to protect themselves and their loved ones. What sets them apart is their ability to conquer fear and willingly step into the terrifying predicaments they find themselves in.

In my opinion, I thoroughly enjoyed “The Black Phone” and was particularly impressed by the acting of its two young leads. Initially, I had doubts about how The Grabber could reappear since he perished at the film’s end, but it seems logical that he might be a ghost. This approach for the sequel maintains the integrity of the initial story without introducing plot inconsistencies. Given that Finn converses with ghosts through the phone and his sister Gwen experiences visions, it makes sense for the sequel to delve deeper into supernatural elements.

In the trailer for The Black Phone 2, there are some especially chilling and frightening moments, like when The Grabber slowly moves through the snow, which I’m eager to see how they’ll fit into the overall narrative. Given that Sinister is one of the most unnerving and disturbing horror films in my opinion, I’m confident that The Black Phone 2 will deliver a terrifying experience while maintaining the well-developed characters from the original movie.

Scott Derrickson Called The Black Phone 2 “Violent, Scarier, More Graphic”

During a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, director Scott Derrickson discussed the atmosphere of “The Black Phone 2.” As the story now takes place during high school years, he noted that this change alters the overall vibe of the follow-up.

As a die-hard fan of chills and thrills, I’ve got to say that a middle school horror flick offers a unique twist compared to its high school counterpart. The tension seems to build exponentially in the former due to the shift in setting.

He continued:

As a movie enthusiast, I must confess that this film pushes the boundaries of violence, fear, and graphic content to new heights. A significant factor contributing to its intensity is the maturity of the child characters involved.

The sequel to “The Black Phone” is set to hit the big screen on October 17th, 2025, and I can hardly wait to find out how Finn and Gwen manage to outwit The Grabber in their next encounter.
