When people first start watching action anime like Bleach, they get caught up in the story and how the characters grow, while also learning how the fights work. But when they rewatch it, fans often become more interested in things like power levels and who’s winning. This makes shows like Bleach even more enjoyable, almost like watching a competitive sport with its own set of stats. Viewers quickly figure out which fighters are consistently strong and who’s just barely making it through.
Generally, the strongest fighters in Bleach who win most of their battles are the main characters who consistently participate in fights. However, Ichigo Kurosaki, the series’ protagonist, is unusual—he typically loses his first fight against important opponents before ultimately winning. He actually lost twice to both Grimmjow and Ulquiorra, and even lost twice to Yhwach. This means that several other characters in Bleach have better win records.
Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto Only Loses When His Enemies Counter His Zanpakuto

It’s interesting to me that Captain Yamamoto, despite being unbelievably powerful – a true legend among Soul Reapers – actually holds a relatively low rank when you look at how well fighters perform overall. I think his sheer reputation sometimes works against him. Everyone knows how strong he is, and they come prepared. This definitely played a role in his two big defeats in the series. First, Aizen managed to seal his powerful fire-based sword during the battle for fake Karakura Town. Then, Yhwach used his medallion to steal Yamamoto’s ultimate technique, his Bankai, and ultimately killed him without much trouble.
Yamamoto has a consistently impressive combat history. He defeated Yhwach hundreds of years ago, and more recently, he triumphed over powerful enemies like Wonderweiss and Driscoll Berci. Interestingly, Wonderweiss was specifically created to challenge Yamamoto, but the Gotei 13 commander defeated him anyway, a feat that clearly stunned onlookers. Yamamoto also effortlessly defeated the Tres Bestias and three Sternritter, all while holding back and choosing not to kill them.
Byakuya Kuchiki Tends to Win Even if His Arrogance Sabotages Him Sometimes
Byakuya is the Very Image of a Successful, Competent Commander
Image via Pierrot. Byakuya Kuchiki always maintains a dignified and skilled warrior persona, consistently backing it up with his fighting ability. He’s had some straightforward victories, including easily defeating Ichigo when they first met, and harshly defeating Renji and Ganju during the Soul Society Arc. Later, his fight with Ichigo ended in a tie, and Byakuya willingly conceded defeat, both losing the battle and proving his honor.
Byakuya performed strongly in several battles, easily defeating Zommari and Yammy (with help from Kenpachi against Yammy). He also managed to overcome Tsukishima’s unusual abilities, though he faced difficulties in the Thousand-Year Blood War arc. During that arc, Byakuya’s overconfidence became a problem when Äs Nödt stole his Bankai and nearly defeated him, but Byakuya later assisted Rukia in getting revenge. Ultimately, Byakuya’s experiences led to significant personal growth and a deeper understanding of both himself and his Zanpakuto.
Uryu Ishida Has Done Well With His Quincy Techniques and Planning
Sometimes, the Plot Bails Uryu Out of Trouble, Too

I’ve always found Uryu Ishida, Ichigo’s friend and a Quincy, to be surprisingly successful in Bleach, even though he’s not a main character. It’s true that he often needed a little help, or some convenient plot twists, to actually secure a win – sometimes his opponent just died while he was still standing. Take his fight with Szayelaporro Grantz, for example; Kurotsuchi had to step in to finish that one. And while he was completely knocked out by Captain Tosen, that wasn’t much of a fight anyway, and Uryu had already lost his powers at that point. Of course, Ulquiorra did kill him once, but Ichigo managed to bring him back and turn the tide.
Uryu has consistently been a powerful force in Bleach. Early on, he assisted Ichigo in battling a Menos Grande and later defeated several Soul Reapers, including Mayuri Kurotsuchi. During the Arrancar arc, he won against both Iceringer and Cirucci Sanderwicci. However, his greatest feats came during the Thousand-Year Blood War, where he overcame Renji’s bankai, defeated Jugram Haschwalth in a one-on-one fight, and even managed to kill Senjumaru Shutara using The Antithesis. He also played a crucial role in Ichigo’s ultimate victory against Yhwach, providing the special silver arrowhead that helped seal the deal.
Kisuke Urahara Wins Whenever He Can Prepare His Cunning Tricks
That Made Kisuke a Special War Power
Image via Pierrot. I’ve noticed that Kisuke Urahara doesn’t get into fights all that often in Bleach, but when he does, he’s incredibly powerful. He had a tough time with Aizen during that flashback, but since then, he’s really taken control in battles. I remember him teaming up with Yoruichi to push back Ulquiorra and Yammy, and he played a key role in helping Ichigo finally defeat Aizen. More recently, at the start of the Thousand-Year Blood War, he was instrumental in taking down Quilge Opie as well.
Kisuke cleverly turned the tables on the Sternritter, helping the Soul Reapers recover their stolen Bankai by using Hollow pills. He then unleashed his powerful, previously unseen Bankai in a battle against Askin Nakk Le Vaar. This was the second time Kisuke had severely weakened a Sternritter, creating an opening for Grimmjow to deliver the final strike. While he doesn’t always finish opponents himself, Kisuke rarely suffers a defeat.
Grimmjow Was on a Winning Streak in the Arrancar Saga
Grimmjow Clings to the Idea of Getting Even Against Ichigo
Image via Pierrot. Many villains in Bleach don’t have much success in battle; characters like Ggio Vega and Zommari Rureaux each fought only once before being defeated. Loly Airvirrne consistently lost her fights without a single win, and it’s surprising she even survived. Grimmjow Jaegerjaques, the 6th Espada, was a much more successful villain. He decisively beat Ichigo once and nearly won their second fight. He also easily defeated both Loly and Menoly in Las Noches and managed to incapacitate Ulquiorra during their confrontation.
Although Ichigo defeated Grimmjow in their last fight, he lived on to win battles during the Thousand-Year Blood War. He even unexpectedly teamed up with Kisuke to defeat Quilge and Askin. However, despite his many victories, Grimmjow remains unfulfilled. Like many of his kind, he constantly seeks more power, hoping to overcome a deep-seated emptiness – a struggle Nnoitora and Baraggan would likely understand.
Sosuke Aizen Has Suffered Only One Permanent Defeat
Ichigo Finished What Aizen Started When Battling Yhwach
Image Pierrot. Sosuke Aizen is a key villain in Bleach who wasn’t content with a simple defeat. We learn through flashbacks that even as a lieutenant, he skillfully defeated the entire Gotei 13. He managed to cover up his disturbing Hollowfication experiments and cleverly avoided punishment from the Kido Corps using his own abilities. Later, during the Soul Society arc, Aizen easily outsmarted and defeated powerful opponents like Toshiro, Ichigo, and Renji, and continued to evade consequences for his actions.
Aizen continued to easily defeat Soul Reapers and Visoreds, using them to demonstrate his power. He finally met his match in Bleach when Ichigo and Kisuke worked together to seal him away. Later, while disguised as Ichigo, Aizen almost lost to Yhwach, but Ichigo regained control of the battle with help from Uryu. Aizen was imprisoned again, but he appeared content with the outcome, which could be seen as another victory for the overwhelmingly powerful villain.
