Bleach: Every Arc, Ranked By Number Of Fights

Summary

  • Bleach arcs vary in the number of fights, with the Fullbring and Arrancar having 12, and the Blood War boasting 36.
  • The Fullbring Arc focuses on Ichigo’s character growth and lore, while the Soul Society Arc has intense battles.
  • The Hueco Mundo Arc is action-packed with iconic battles, setting the stage for intense confrontations in the series.

In a shonen series like Bleach, it’s crucial to keep the pace lively with numerous intense and thrilling battles to captivate the young audience. However, the number of fights varies significantly across different story arcs, as each one has its unique atmosphere and narrative that requires a specific balance.

As a die-hard fan, I’ve got to say it’s no secret that nail-biting encounters make a series rewatch truly enjoyable. Some arcs may not have as many heart-pounding moments but they often provide a slower build-up with rich lore and in-depth dialogue instead. Regardless, each arc in Bleach is a must-see due to their unique offerings. However, if we’re focusing solely on the fights, here’s my ranking of how they stack up, considering only full arcs without flashback arcs like Turn Back the Pendulum, which are brief and mostly consist of one or two fights.

7. Fullbring Arc

Total Fights: 12

In simpler terms, the Fullbring Arc stands out in the series as being quite controversial due to its limited number of battles. This controversy stems from the fact that author Tite Kubo chose a unique approach for this arc, emphasizing Ichigo’s character development and emotional journey after losing his Soul Reaper powers, rather than focusing on grand and flashy fight scenes.

In my opinion, this arc takes a more deliberate pace, focusing deeply on character development rather than rushing through action sequences like many others. Yet, it doesn’t forget to inject thrilling moments to keep the excitement level high. The Fullbring Arc is particularly renowned for its rich lore expansions and the vibrant new characters introduced as Fullbringers, who reappear later on in the narrative.

6. Arrancar Invasion

Total Fights: 12

The Arrancar Invasion serves as a foundation for larger story arcs that follow, although it doesn’t last long. Even with its limited runtime, it offers some thrilling battles filled with unexpected twists. For instance, the brief clash between Rukia and D-Roy Rinker highlights Rukia using her Zanpakuto’s freezing abilities to suspend the Arrancar mid-flight, demonstrating the immense power hidden within her.

Later on during this storyline, I witnessed Ikakku unleashing his Bankai in a valiant effort to repel the Arrancar forces, a moment many viewers consider one of the most impressive and bold power-ups throughout the series. This arc also marked Grimmjow’s brutal defeat of Ichigo, leaving him battered and humiliated. This encounter sparked their enduring rivalry and served as a harsh reminder to Ichigo that his journey was far from over, teaching him the importance of continued growth.

5. Substitute Shinigami Arc

Total Fights: 14

As a passionate fan, I can tell you that the initial storyline of this captivating series unfolds in a ‘monster-of-the-week’ style, with most episodes focusing on my crew, led by Ichigo, engaging in battles against Hollows. Given it was the early stages of the show, these fights are not overly complex, making them easy to follow and enjoy!

Among the memorable skirmishes in this initial storyline are Rukia’s intense fight against the Shrieker and Ichigo’s climactic encounter with Grand Fisher. However, what truly makes this arc intriguing is the sudden emergence of Renji and Byakuya at its conclusion, leading to an engaging exchange. Although it may not have as many battles as other arcs, Substitute Shinigami offers a substantial amount of action for fans to enjoy.

4. Hueco Mundo Arc

Total Fights: 16

In the Arrancar storyline, some of the most memorable and distinctive battles in the series unfold. Among these epic encounters is Ichigo’s long-awaited rematch against Grimmjow, but what truly stands out is his battle with Ulquiorra. This fight resulted in Ichigo’s Soul Reaper powers being completely consumed by his Hollow side. Yet, it isn’t just Ichigo who gets to participate in these thrilling battles; there are many other breathtaking fights here as well, such as Nel versus Nnoitra, Uryu and Renji versus Szayelaporro, and Rukia versus Aaroniero.

When the Soul Reaper captains choose to join the battle, they also engage in several fights, such as the mental confrontation between Byakuya and Zommari, and the intense duel between Kenpachi and Nnoitra. It’s no surprise that the Hueco Mundo arc is admired by many fans due to its high level of action and character growth.

3. Soul Society Arc

Total Fights: 18

Ichigo and his companions are clueless about the ordeal they’re walking into as they plan to storm the Sul Society to rescue Rukia. Once they make it inside, they find themselves repeatedly engaged in grueling battles that only grow tougher as they progress. Unfortunately, Chad meets a crushing defeat at the hands of Kyoraku. However, Ichigo and Uryu push past some of the strongest captains within the entire Gotei 13 using their unique abilities.

In keeping with what we’d anticipate, it’s Ichigo who faces off against the most opponents during this storyline, ranging from Renji to Kenpachi, and culminating in his decisive clash with Byakuya. This confrontation would mark the debut of Ichigo’s Hollow powers. Interestingly, some conflicts within this arc are instigated among the Soul Reapers themselves, as they start to distrust one another following Aizen’s apparent demise.

2. Faka Karakura Town Arc

Total Fights: 25

When Aizen arrived at Karakura Town, determined to collect as many souls as he could for his schemes, a group of Soul Reaper captains and lieutenants stood in his path, unwilling to let him proceed without a struggle. Instead of engaging them all simultaneously, Aizen first dispatched his Espada to handle the obstacles in his way, leading to numerous intense encounters. These clashes included Hitsugaya’s tense standoff with Harribel and Kyoraku’s fight against Starrk, the top-ranked Espada.

After the preliminary skirmishes have concluded, Aizen proceeds to dismember each Soul Reaper systematically, instructing Gin to delay Ichigo so he doesn’t interfere. The storyline culminates with the memorable showdown between Ichigo, transformed into his Final Gestuga form, and Aizen, who has fused with the Hogyoku and wields god-like powers, determined to dominate the world.

1. The Thousand-Year Blood War Arc

Number Of Fights: 36

Delving into the climactic phase of this captivating series, I can’t help but anticipate the epic clash between Soul Reapers and Quincy, a war that has been building up for quite some time. It’s only logical to expect an abundance of battles, ranging from swift skirmishes to conflicts with momentous consequences for our world and its destiny.

In the early stages of this arc, our valiant Soul Reapers find themselves locked in combat with Yhwach’s formidable army of Sternritters. Each of these warriors boasts their own unique powers and battle strategies, making them a formidable challenge. The ability of the Sternritter to pilfer captain-class Bankai abilities puts our Soul Reapers at a disadvantage, leading even some of the most distinguished members to suffer humiliating defeats, such as Byakuya.

As the narrative unfolds, Soul Reapers gradually regain power on the battlefield below, yet a separate conflict arises in the Soul Palace. The Schutzstaffel engage Squad 0 in combat there, but it’s not just that; Ichigo faces Yhwach, one of several encounters between them during this part of the tale. Additionally, the Wahrwelt saga comes into play, serving as a significant boost for the Soul Reapers as they confront some of Yhwach’s most experienced warriors, including the enigmatic Pernida and the massive figure of Gerard Valkyrie.
