On June 17, 1995, Yhwach stripped the powers from Quincies he deemed unworthy, causing numerous casualties, among them Kanae Ishida (née Katagiri), Uryū Ishida’s mother and a fragile woman.

Masaki Kurosaki’s demise was due to a malfunction in the release of her Soul King’s emblem (Blut Vene), which was exceptionally powerful among Quincies. The term “Auswählen” is German for “Selection,” and it refers to the process by which Yhwach selects individuals from whom he takes back pieces of his own soul. This enhancement allowed Uryū not only to break free from Shutara Senjumaru’s special ability (Bankai), but also to kill her with a single shot.

Who Survived the Selection?

The Interesting Case of Uryū Ishida

As a devoted fan, I’ve always pondered over the unique case of Yachiru Unohana, or more commonly known as Uryū. Unlike Masaki Kurosaki and Kanae Ishida, his Quincy powers didn’t fade away after their demise. Instead, he carried on living, holding the belief that he was the last surviving Quincy, following the passing of his grandfather and mentor, Soken Ishida.

As an ardent fan, I must admit that much about the Ishidas remains shrouded in mystery, yet we do know they were authentic Quincies, rendering them immune to the effects of Auswählen. Interestingly, there’s a theory circulating about Uryū’s unique situation, and it seems to revolve around his grandmother, Ryūken Ishida’s mother, Izumi.

In a quick glance, we notice a gruesome wound on Izumi’s thigh that resembles the scar left on Orihime when her brother Sora transformed into a Hollow. This suggests that Izumi was aware of Masaki’s situation, likely because she too had been attacked by a Hollow at some unspecified time before. Here’s where things get interesting: if Izumi experienced the Hollow attack during her pregnancy with Ryuken, then Ryuken wouldn’t be a pure Quincy but rather both a Quincy and Fullbringer, implying that Uryū could be a second-generation Fullbringer.

If being exposed to Hollow Reiatsu is necessary for creating a Fullbringer, and a Fullbringer who was already a Quincy exists, then the power stemming from Yhwach would be contaminated and harmful to the Quincy King. Uryū’s survival of the Auswählen event led Yhwach to choose him as his successor and put him through the Schrift assignment ritual, which granted him a specific letter not yet shown in the anime. It seems that Yhwach could predict the assigned Schrift beforehand, though it is unknown if this ability only manifests after The Almighty’s activation. Uryu’s survival could be linked to the Schrift he ultimately received, suggesting that the power was latent within him.
