As a seasoned anime enthusiast with years of experience under my belt, I must say that the story of Uryū Ishida in Bleach is nothing short of intriguing. The character’s journey, marked by survival against all odds, has left an indelible impression on me.

In the world of BLEACH, the Auswählen stands out as a terrifying aspect of Quincy King’s prophecy and his ability to sacrifice pieces of his soul. This feature has significantly impacted various characters, such as Ichigo Kurosaki, whose deepest regret is the guilt he carries over his mother’s demise at the age of nine. The Auswählen manifests as a brilliant light that obliterates Quincy powers, leaving behind a gruesome sight – stripping flesh from bones in the process.

Although it’s generally believed that the Auswählen process is lethal, there are a handful of Quincies who have miraculously endured this ordeal. The first known survivor among them is Uryū Ishida. What characteristics do these surviving Quincies share?

The Truth Behind Masaki Kurosaki’s Death

BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War — Which Quincies Survived the Auswählen?

As foretold in the prophecy called the Kaiser Gesang, the ruler of the Quincies is expected to reappear following a 999-year absence. When Ichigo was nine years old, nine years before the events of BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War, his mother perished after an unfortunate run-in with the infamous Hollow, Grand Fisher, who had ensnared him. On June 17, 1995, Yhwach stripped the powers from Quincies he deemed unworthy, causing numerous casualties, among them Kanae Ishida (née Katagiri), Uryū Ishida’s mother and a fragile woman.

Choosing, or rather, selectively distributing energy. It draws power from those deemed superfluous by Quincy and redirects it to those in need. A reallocation of force. The former will weaken and eventually fade away, while the latter are reinforced with even more vigor than they previously possessed.

Masaki Kurosaki’s demise was due to a malfunction in the release of her Soul King’s emblem (Blut Vene), which was exceptionally powerful among Quincies. The term “Auswählen” is German for “Selection,” and it refers to the process by which Yhwach selects individuals from whom he takes back pieces of his own soul. Unique among Quincies, Yhwach has the ability to bestow power, and when those who have received this power die, it returns to him.

The confined Quincy King…

Regains his pulse after 900 years.

His mind after 90 years.

His strength after 9 years.

And the world… in 9 days.

In the course of BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 2, Yhwach and his powerful unit, the Schutzstaffel, make an assault on the Soul King’s Palace. They manage to overpower Zero Squad, who were guarding the Soul King, in part due to a significant power surge Yhwach obtained after another Auswählen. This time, pillars of light sprang up across the battlefield, stripping away the powers of those deemed expendable, causing numerous casualties. Sternritter N, Robert Accutrone, is seen filled with despair upon witnessing the Auswählen. He understands its implications: those struck by the light are considered superfluous, and as a result, are abandoned by His Majesty.

Being struck by the light is lethal for most, yet some Quincies skillfully dodge or hide to avoid its full impact, known as Auswählen. However, those who were not considered essential by Yhwach still lost their Quincy powers and became weaker than when they first appeared. The recent Auswählen differs from the one that occurred nine years ago because this time it was intended for reallocating powers to Yhwach’s bodyguards, or Schutzstaffel, increasing their power significantly. This enhancement allowed Uryū not only to break free from Shutara Senjumaru’s special ability (Bankai), but also to kill her with a single shot.

As a devoted fan, I’ve always pondered over the unique case of Yachiru Unohana, or more commonly known as Uryū. Unlike Masaki Kurosaki and Kanae Ishida, his Quincy powers didn’t fade away after their demise. Instead, he carried on living, holding the belief that he was the last surviving Quincy, following the passing of his grandfather and mentor, Soken Ishida.

As an ardent fan, I must admit that much about the Ishidas remains shrouded in mystery, yet we do know they were authentic Quincies, rendering them immune to the effects of Auswählen. Interestingly, there’s a theory circulating about Uryū’s unique situation, and it seems to revolve around his grandmother, Ryūken Ishida’s mother, Izumi.

In a quick glance, we notice a gruesome wound on Izumi’s thigh that resembles the scar left on Orihime when her brother Sora transformed into a Hollow. This suggests that Izumi was aware of Masaki’s situation, likely because she too had been attacked by a Hollow at some unspecified time before. Here’s where things get interesting: if Izumi experienced the Hollow attack during her pregnancy with Ryuken, then Ryuken wouldn’t be a pure Quincy but rather both a Quincy and Fullbringer, implying that Uryū could be a second-generation Fullbringer.

If being exposed to Hollow Reiatsu is necessary for creating a Fullbringer, and a Fullbringer who was already a Quincy exists, then the power stemming from Yhwach would be contaminated and harmful to the Quincy King. Uryū’s survival of the Auswählen event led Yhwach to choose him as his successor and put him through the Schrift assignment ritual, which granted him a specific letter not yet shown in the anime. It seems that Yhwach could predict the assigned Schrift beforehand, though it is unknown if this ability only manifests after The Almighty’s activation. Uryu’s survival could be linked to the Schrift he ultimately received, suggesting that the power was latent within him.
