Jujutsu Kaisen Draws a Lot Of Inspiration From Bleach

Gege Is a Huge Bleach Fan

It’s not unexpected that fans view Jujutsu Kaisen as the continuation of Bleach, given their shared characteristics. Truth be told, Bleach has seen a significant resurgence in popularity with the debut of its Thousand Year Blood War anime, a testament to its enduring appeal. Over the years, it has consistently been one of the major players in the anime world, standing alongside heavyweights like One Piece and Naruto, even though it never quite reached their levels of fame.

Indeed, the impact that Bleach has made on numerous shows, particularly on Jujutsu Kaisen, should not be overlooked, as it has grown into one of the most significant shonen series in recent times.

While it’s true that Jujutsu Kaisen isn’t solely influenced by Bleach, there’s no denying the significant impact Bleach has had, as evident in its similarities with the series. Fans can also recognize traces of other series like Naruto, but the parallels with Bleach are undoubtedly strong.

Gege Akutami, the mastermind behind the “Jujutsu Kaisen” series, has a strong fondness for “Bleach,” which becomes evident when comparing the similarities. One of the most noted resemblances is that of Bankai and Domain Expansion, as they operate quite similarly in both stories.

A striking resemblance fans of Bleach might notice in Jujutsu Kaisen lies in certain character designs and character types. For instance, numerous viewers find Maki from Jujutsu Kaisen remarkably similar to Lisa from Bleach.

Recently, I’ve come across a fascinating revelation: Gege, the creator, has openly admitted that one of his primary character inspirations stems from one of Bleach’s most renowned figures.

Gege Reveals Megumi Is Inspired By a Bleach Character

Megumi’s Relationship With Tsumiki is Inspired By Rukia

Recently, there was a special event for Jujutsu Kaisen held in Tokyo, featuring an engaging Q&A session with the series creator. During this session, one of the questions posed was about the sources of inspiration for the character Megumi, who is a key figure in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Later on, Gege Akutami disclosed the inspirations behind Megumi’s character. One of these sources is unrelated to Bleach, and goes by the name Megumi Wanibuchi.

You’ve accomplished a lot, Megumi. My intention was to build a world where Tsumiki wouldn’t experience hardship or sorrow. Since I couldn’t achieve that, I wanted at least to safeguard our simple lifestyle as much as possible while I lived. I desired to savor familiar meals, watch laundry drying in the sun, and see Tsumiki depart with someone like you under the warm afternoon light. In these moments, I would reflect on my happiness.

Gege shared that the character Megumi was inspired by Rukia, a well-loved figure from Bleach. While there are similarities between them in terms of their appearance and personality, it’s not these aspects that Megumi primarily shares with Rukia. Instead, their relationship with their siblings is where the resemblance lies. Much like Rukia, Megumi’s story significantly influences her brother Tsumiki Fushiguro’s character. According to Gege, he used Rukia’s bond with her sibling as a foundation for crafting Megumi’s character.
