As a longtime fan of the StarCraft universe, I can hardly contain my excitement about the rumored shooter that Blizzard is reportedly working on. With Dan Hay, a former Far Cry executive producer, at the helm, it’s clear that this project is in good hands.
As a devoted StarCraft fan, I can’t contain my excitement when I heard about the potential new game in our beloved universe! On September 26, 2024, Jason Schreier dropped a bombshell during an interview with IGN, revealing that Blizzard Entertainment is indeed working on something new. Unlike the strategic games we’ve seen before, this one seems to be a shooter, offering a fresh take on the StarCraft universe.
Over the coming weeks, mounting evidence hinted at the possibility of a Starcraft-themed shooter game. In November, Blizzard’s official site posted a job listing, suggesting they were working on an “upcoming open-world shooter.” Although Starcraft wasn’t mentioned directly, fans speculated that this project and the one Jason Schreier had reported on might be linked. Additionally, an unnamed Starcraft game received a rating on the ESRB website recently, strengthening claims that Blizzard was developing something related to Starcraft. If this Starcraft shooter is indeed in development, it could simultaneously end two significant trends for the renowned RTS series.
Blizzard’s Rumored StarCraft Shooter May Be a First for the Franchise in Multiple Ways
Blizzard Tried to Make StarCraft Shooters Before, But Its Attempts Were Unsuccessful
The concept of a StarCraft-themed shooter game has been proposed in the past, but as of now, nothing substantial has materialized. In the early 2000s, Blizzard Entertainment tried to launch a game titled StarCraft: Ghost, which was a third-person shooter spin-off from the StarCraft franchise. This game was intended for home consoles such as PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Nintendo GameCube. However, it wasn’t Blizzard Entertainment who developed this game, but Nihilistic Software, recognized for their work on Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption, Resistance: Burning Skies, and Conan (2007). The initial plan was to release StarCraft: Ghost in late 2003. However, due to several delays and a change in developers, it was eventually canceled in 2014.
Back in 2004, Nihilistic Software stopped working on the game titled StarCraft: Ghost. Later, the task was passed to Swingin’ Ape Studios, a company that eventually got bought and merged by Blizzard Entertainment in 2005.
In the later part of the 2010s, Blizzard Entertainment attempted to develop a new first-person shooter (FPS) within the StarCraft universe. This particular StarCraft game was given the code name Ares, distinguishing it from previous attempts like StarCraft: Ghost. Unlike its predecessors, Ares was an FPS rather than a third-person shooter (TPS). Regrettably, details about Ares were scarce, aside from confirming that it would showcase Zerg aliens and Terran marines. However, due to Blizzard’s focus on Overwatch and Diablo during that period, the development of Ares was halted in 2019. Had it been released, Ares would have marked the first non-RTS (real-time strategy) installment within the StarCraft franchise. Unfortunately, the cancellation of Ares left fans disappointed; however, recent whispers suggest that a new StarCraft shooter being developed at Blizzard could potentially make history by taking its place.
The Rumored StarCraft Shooter May Be the First SC Game in 15+ Years
Discussing an exciting prospect, if Blizzard eventually unveils their proposed StarCraft shooter, it would mark the first game in the series since about 15 years ago. Since the original release of StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty in 2010, no new standalone title has been launched within this cherished real-time strategy franchise. Although Blizzard provided consistent content updates and paid expansions for StarCraft 2 over several years, they haven’t released a new game from the series, either as an RTS or a third-person shooter. Considering these facts, the rumored StarCraft shooter could potentially revolutionize the series. It might attract a fresh audience due to its broader, more mainstream genre and also rejuvenate the StarCraft franchise with its much-awaited return.
