In 1999, Konami and Team Silent introduced the gaming community to Silent Hill, a game that significantly transformed the genre landscape. The first installment of this series, often referred to as Silent Hill 1, played a pivotal role in establishing and launching the psychological survival horror genre, leaving an indelible mark on it since then. As the series progressed, it delved deeper into complex characters and personalized fear within the eponymous town, inspiring many other creators. Unfortunately, some later installments didn’t fare as well, causing a prolonged slump for Silent Hill. It even seemed to be on the brink of becoming obsolete until last year when Bloober Team released an outstanding remake of the iconic second entry, revitalizing its popularity.
Following the achievement of the Silent Hill 2 Remake, speculations ran high that the studio and Konami would carry on their collaboration. As expected, in June, it was officially announced that a remake for Silent Hill 1 is underway, albeit details about it remain scarce. Given this development, it’s logical to assume that this would be the next game to receive a remake. While Silent Hill undeniably deserves recognition, there’s one element that it and several other installments share which often sparks debate among fans: the cult of The Order. The upcoming remake presents an opportunity to address or enhance this aspect in much the same way as the SH2 Remake did with certain alterations.
Bloomberg Team’s upcoming game, “Cronos: A New Beginning,” is scheduled for release this autumn, whereas the new Silent Hill title, developed by NeoBards, will be available on September 25.
The Silent Hill 1 Remake Has an Excellent Chance to Improve Upon The Order
Silent Hill’s Cult of The Order is Often One of its More Contentious and Divisive Inclusions
In most Silent Hill games, excluding Silent Hill 2 which stands out as a significant milestone, the secretive cult known as The Order plays a role in the story. However, even in Silent Hill 2, hints of The Order can be detected during James Sunderland’s time in the town. The Order was initially introduced in the original game through Dahlia Gillespie, a captivating leader with ties to and manipulative schemes surrounding Harry Mason, the protagonist, and his adopted daughter Cheryl, which were crucial to the plot.
A common critique leveled at many horror games that incorporate cults into their narratives is that it might feel jarring in the case of Silent Hill. The revelation that an Order has been secretly manipulating and controlling events behind the scenes could potentially diminish the eerie elements of Silent Hill, as it suggests that the town’s strange pull may not be supernaturally powerful or inexplicable but rather due to the actions of The Order. This could take away from the mystery and terror associated with the game, making the horror seem less original or impactful by giving it a more ordinary explanation.
How Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 1 Remake Could Update or Recontextualize The Order’s Presence
As a devoted fan, I eagerly anticipate the Silent Hill 1 remake, hoping that it will follow suit with its predecessor’s vision while subtly enriching certain aspects. While it may not be feasible to drastically modify or eliminate The Order’s role, I’d love to see intriguing additions or slight rearrangements that deepen the narrative and keep me guessing throughout the experience.
In revamping Silent Hill 1, Bloober Team could subtly alter certain characters and their relationships, using fresh dialogue or additional scenes to expand upon the existing storyline. These modifications may not only smooth out the narrative but also present intriguing new angles or hints. By doing so, they can strike a harmonious balance in the Silent Hill universe while enhancing its original elements with a contemporary touch. The goal is to stay true to the spirit of the original while offering an updated interpretation of The Order and its key figures, all while preserving the essence that made Silent Hill iconic.
