Bloober’s Silent Hill 2 Remake May Be Just The Tip of The Iceberg

Bloober's Silent Hill 2 Remake May Be Just The Tip of The Iceberg

As a seasoned gamer who’s been through the highs and lows of the Silent Hill franchise, I can’t help but feel a sense of renewed hope with Bloober Team’s recent success with the Silent Hill 2 Remake. It’s like hearing a beautiful symphony after years of listening to off-key covers.

Back in 2022, when it was announced that Bloober Team was developing Konami’s Silent Hill 2 Remake, there were a variety of reactions across the internet. The Silent Hill series, originally created by the now-defunct Japanese studio Team Silent, had previously been developed by Western studios, which didn’t yield the best results for the franchise. Most of the games released post-Team Silent received mediocre reviews at best and harsh criticism at worst. Furthermore, Bloober Team’s past projects have had a mixed response, with some horror titles receiving positive feedback but still being somewhat divisive. Given this history, some fans were worried that Bloober Team might not do justice to the Silent Hill 2 Remake.

Fortunately, any apprehensions among fans about the remake of Silent Hill 2 were alleviated. Despite initially receiving unfavorable responses prior to its release, the Silent Hill 2 Remake has become a massive success, both critically and financially, since it launched on PS5 and PC earlier this month. The remake of Silent Hill 2 has earned rave reviews on platforms like OpenCritic and Steam, and it sold more than a million copies within just three days, placing it among the fastest-selling games in the Silent Hill series. Given its impressive performance, it appears that the success of the Silent Hill 2 Remake could signal a new chapter for the SH series under Bloober Team’s guidance.

Bloober Team is Open to Making More Games in the Silent Hill Franchise

After the unveiling of “Cronos: The New Dawn”, a fresh sci-fi horror IP from the studio, director Wojciech Piejko told IGN that Bloober Team might take on additional Silent Hill projects. As per Piejko, Bloober is always ready to explore new opportunities they are fond of, so if Konami grants the Polish developer the chance to continue working on Silent Hill, it’s quite likely that future installments in the iconic horror series could be remade, similar to Silent Hill 2.

Bloober Team Should Remake Silent Hill 1 and 3, If Given the Chance to Do So

Among the Silent Hill games, it’s plausible that the original one might be the best candidate for Bloober Team to remake, should they get the chance. Out of all, the original Silent Hill (released on PS1 in 1999) could particularly benefit from a contemporary refresh. This game was revolutionary for its time in horror gaming, offering a deep, mature narrative that was rare among its peers. However, while the story remains compelling, the graphics and gameplay have aged significantly. Therefore, a remake of the 1999 Silent Hill, featuring updated combat mechanics and improved visuals, seems like a natural progression for the Silent Hill series following the Silent Hill 2 Remake.

If Bloober Team decides to remake the original Silent Hill, it’s likely they should consider remaking Silent Hill 3 as well at a later time. While their titles may not suggest it, SH3 actually serves as a direct sequel to SH1. Consequently, gamers would benefit from playing both games in sequence to fully appreciate the storylines. It would be a pity if only one of these two games were updated and released on modern platforms, while the other was overlooked.

Silent Hill 4: The Room Should Also Get the Silent Hill 2 Remake Treatment

Beyond the games they’re currently working on, Bloober Team might want to explore the possibility of creating a modern adaptation of Silent Hill 4: The Room, originally released in 2004. This was the last Silent Hill game developed by Team Silent before Konami closed the studio. While it may not have been as universally well-received as their earlier works, it’s still a title that warrants a fresh look for contemporary gaming platforms. Unlike some of the later entries in the Silent Hill series, which were Western-developed and might require a complete overhaul to justify remakes, a remake of Silent Hill 4 could potentially be built upon its existing foundations.
