Summary
- Teruyuki Toriyama, former Sony producer of Bloodborne and Demon’s Souls fame, joins the new Tokyo studio, Sirius.
- The team plans to “create games that make users’ hearts shine.”
- Sirius Studio aims to become a world-class developer, focusing on international game releases for consoles, PC, and VR/AR titles.
Previously employed at Sony’s Japan Studio, Teruyuki Toriyama has now moved to a new studio located in Tokyo, Japan. Among his notable contributions are the games Bloodborne and Demon’s Souls. After departing from Sony in 2020, Toriyama joined Thirdverse, where he collaborates with producer Hikaru Okamura and Hideki Irie, who previously held a senior position at Sega.
Sony boasts a collection of well-known franchises such as God of War, The Last of Us, and Ghost of Tsushima. Yet, PlayStation is also fond of action RPG games in the vein of soulslike titles, which explains the buzz surrounding FromSoftware’s new IP, The Duskbloods, during Nintendo’s recent presentation. With all eyes on the upcoming Nintendo console, Sony itself seems to be gauging PlayStation users’ interest in a potential Switch 2 model. This exploration might be aimed at gathering information for the company’s future handheld device, possibly following up on the successful PlayStation Portable line.
I’m thrilled to share that I’ve joined forces with Toriyama, Irie, and Tomohiro Suzuki in founding Sirius Studio, a groundbreaking venture under the umbrella of Gz Group, a pioneering company specializing in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) games based out of Osaka, Japan. As we embark on this exciting journey, I’m honored to take on the role of president, with Irie serving as my trusted executive vice president and executive producer – much like Jason Blundell who spearheaded a new PlayStation studio known as Dark Outlaw after his work on Call of Duty Zombies.
Unlike our previous venture Thirdverse, which pivoted towards the creation of casual games, Sirius Studio aims to focus on the development and sales of high-end digital games for consoles, PCs, and VR/AR platforms. We’re eager to explore the realms of planning, development, and sales in this new frontier, ready to make our mark and deliver exceptional gaming experiences.
Former Bloodborne and Demon’s Souls Producer Joins New Sirius Studio

Toriyama and FromSoft’s work on “Demon’s Souls” has earned it a spot among the top RPGs of the 2020s, alongside games like “Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader”, “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth”, and “Baldur’s Gate 3”. However, the team is currently holding back on announcing any major upcoming titles for now. Their long-term goal is to elevate the studio into a globally recognized development powerhouse, aiming to release games not just in Japan but also worldwide, particularly targeting the 80% of the VR market that speaks English.
After crafting the iconic game “Bloodborne” for Sony, Sirius aspires to inspire similar passion in players by creating games that spark joy and warmth within their hearts. With a decade’s worth of impact, “Bloodborne” has become a cornerstone of the soulslike genre, leaving fans yearning for a follow-up for years on end. The gaming community was left buzzing during Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct presentation due to the introduction of FromSoft’s new IP that bore a striking resemblance to the anticipated sequel. However, “The Duskbloods” could potentially be the long-awaited “Bloodborne” sequel fans have been eagerly anticipating.
