As someone who grew up reading Blue Exorcist, I can say that this long-awaited return to the world of the Exorcists has brought me immense joy! The anime has been a part of my life for over a decade now, and it’s incredible to see it still going strong.
As I take a stroll down memory lane, it’s hard not to feel a pang of nostalgia when I come across Blue Exorcist. This manga has been a beloved part of my teen years, as it was first published in Shueisha’s Jump SQ magazine back in 2009. Over the years, its popularity has soared, with the animation adaptation of the story’s beginning in 2011 significantly contributing to its success.
In 2017, we finally got the second season based on the Kyoto Saga, but it took a while. A-1 Pictures, known for their work on Fairy Tail, handled both seasons, although they had different main teams. Fans who were eagerly waiting for more had to wait several years before hearing some positive news: in January 2024, the anime made its comeback for a third season, this time produced by VOLN studio and directed by Daisuke Yoshida.
Fortunately, they didn’t have to wait for years once more; instead, the fourth season kicked off in October. This season delved into the “Beyond the Snow Saga”. It has now been announced that, starting from January 4, 2025, it will start adapting a new arc, also recognized as the “Blue Night Remembrance”.
Break During the Holidays
Typically, anime series tend to take a hiatus during the final week of the year. Therefore, the final episode of “Beyond Snow Saga” will be released on December 22. The series will then resume on January 4, introducing this new arc earlier than some might anticipate.
Blue Exorcist Serialization
In the original manga, the storyline known as “Blue Night Remembrance” spans from volumes 22 to 25. If the anime adapts this segment completely in its upcoming episodes, it will reach the current arc titled “Of One Cloth” which began with chapter 121 (in the 26th volume). The most recent chapters can be read for free on Manga Plus and Shonen Jump platforms.
The serialization of Blue Exorcist has experienced multiple pauses over time. As per ANN reports, it was put on hold between July 2021 and May 2022, allowing the author to concentrate on a different endeavor. After that, another hiatus occurred from January 2023 to May 2023, with no additional updates. Subsequently, in the same year, the series took a break in October due to the author’s COVID-19 recovery. Recently, it paused again, this time from September to November, following the author’s surgery resulting from an unspecified health issue.
Because the series appears in a monthly publication, missing a month means just one installment won’t come out during that time (in weekly magazines, it would mean approximately four chapters wouldn’t be released). It’s not too much of an inconvenience, considering it allows Kato to prioritize her health.
Blue Exorcist is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
