Key Takeaways

  • Blue Exorcist manga is on hiatus due to the author’s illness and surgery.
  • Author Kazue Kato assures fans the illness is not life-threatening.
  • Manga will resume in the December issue of Jump SQ. magazine.

As a dedicated fan of Blue Exorcist, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment upon learning about the temporary hiatus of the manga. However, I understand that health comes first and I wish Kazue Kato a swift and full recovery from her recent surgery. It’s comforting to know that the illness is not life-threatening, and I eagerly await the resumption of the series in December.

Due to author Kazue Kato’s recent illness diagnosis and recovery from surgery, the popular “Blue Exorcist” manga will be temporarily paused. On September 4th, she shared this news on her social media platform, which is now known as X (previously Twitter).

The manga titled “Blue Exorist” won’t be featured in Shueisha’s Jump SQ. magazine for November, but it will return in the December issue set to release on November 4th. Previously, you might have noticed that it was also absent from the September issue.

The Blue Exorcist Manga Takes a Short Break

In March, Kato received a diagnosis following a regular health examination. More recently, she underwent surgery, which turned out well but requires her time to fully heal. Prior to the operation, Kato had been working on the series and attending hospital visits. She hasn’t disclosed the nature of her illness, but Kato reassured her fans that it’s not a critical condition.

The “Blue Exorcist” manga was initially published under Shueisha’s Jump Comics SQ imprint within the Jump Square magazine back in 2009. To date, a total of 31 volumes have been released, with 29 of these volumes available in English translations through Viz Media. They characterize the series as follows:

Brought up by renowned exorcist Father Fujimoto, Rin Okumura was unaware of his biological parentage. However, a heated dispute with Father Fujimoto ultimately leads Rin to an appalling revelation – the blood of the demon lord Satan courses through his veins! Determined to vanquish Satan, Rin embarks on a new path, enrolling in the enigmatic True Cross Academy to become an exorcist. Can Rin battle demons and conceal his diabolic lineage? The journey won’t be straightforward, especially when wielding his father’s sword unleashes the demonic energy residing within him!

A television series based on anime, developed by A-1 Pictures, was broadcast from April to October in 2011. This show was steered by director Tensai Okamura (known for The Seven Deadly Sins and Soul Eater), while Ryota Yamaguchi (notable for Kanon and Medabots) took charge of the scriptwriting, and Hiroyuki Sawano (recognized for Attack on Titan and Kill la Kill) crafted the music for this series.

In the winter of 2017, a continuation series called “Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga” premiered. This was followed by “Blue Exorcist: Shimane Illuminati Saga,” which aired in the winter of 2024. Coming up next are two new seasons: “Beyond the Snow Saga” and “The Blue Night Saga,” scheduled to air in fall 2024 and winter 2025 respectively.
