Summary

  • Geraldine Viswanathan’s role in Thunderbolts* may have been confirmed as Songbird.
  • Marvel Studios dropped footage on X, where Viswanathan’s character can be seen wearing a necklace with a songbird pendant.
  • Marvel’s decision to keep Viswanathan’s role mysterious generates anticipation and fan theories.

One of the highly anticipated films of the year, “Thunderbolts,” isn’t just generating buzz from Marvel Studios, but from the entire Hollywood industry. However, some roles in the movie are yet to be confirmed, but it seems that Geraldine Viswanathan’s intriguing, much-discussed character may no longer be one of them.

The upcoming film titled “Thunderbolts” is set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will be directed by Jake Schreier, known for “Paper Towns” and Netflix’s “Beef.” This movie boasts a star-studded cast that includes Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Lewis Pullman as Robert Reynolds/Sentry, and Geraldine Viswanathan in a role yet to be revealed. A fresh teaser for the highly anticipated superhero movie might have hinted at her character’s identity.

Marvel Studios unveiled fresh clips for the upcoming movie Thunderbolts on platform X, previously known as Twitter. One scene showcases Viswanathan in a phone conversation, saying, “No one is coming to our rescue“. However, sharp-eyed viewers picked up on an intriguing detail often overlooked: she’s wearing a pendant of a songbird around her neck. Reddit user u/KevinPigaChu shared a close-up image of Viswanathan’s scene, highlighting the pendant. Although the picture isn’t crystal clear, it seems to depict a songbird pendant. This small detail has ignited speculation that Viswanthan might be Songbird. While her character is shrouded in mystery, it’s known that she goes by “Mel”. The subtle hint fuels theories about her possible identity as Melissa Gold, better known as Songbird.

It’s Looking More And More Like Geraldine Viswanathan Is Playing Songbird In Thunderbolts*

During an interview with Screen Rant in January to publicize the romantic comedy film “You’re Cordially Invited,” Viswanathan was asked about her role. In the movie, she sang a musical number with Will Ferrell, portraying father and daughter characters named Jim and Jenni. When the interviewer referred to her as a “songbird,” Viswanathan smiled and denied it. She claimed she had no idea what was being discussed and hadn’t heard anything like that. Despite her nervousness, she emphasized that while she sang in the movie, she wasn’t actually a bird.

As a film enthusiast, I find it fascinating how Marvel Studios has chosen to shroud Viswanathan’s role in mystery. I believe they’ve done this to keep the suspense high and spark fan theories. It seems Songbird could be pivotal in the upcoming movie, which might explain why her role has been kept under wraps as much as possible.

In the comics, Songbird, initially known as Screaming Mimi, transitions from a villain to a hero within the Thunderbolts team. She’s one of the most reformed members and deeply desires to make a positive impact, often serving as the emotional heart and moral compass of the group.

Given her compelling emotional journey in the source material, Songbird could resonate strongly with viewers, potentially becoming a beloved new character in the MCU. It’s not far-fetched to speculate that Marvel has grand plans for her appearance in future films within the universe.

Thunderbolts* will hit theaters on May 2, 2025.
