Borderlands 2’s Cut Content Explained

Summary

  • Borderlands 2 had unused weapons like the ERROR MESSAGE Torgue rocket launcher and Harpoon Gun.
  • Cut graphics in Borderlands 2 include missing textures for shields like Slag Nova and Spike.
  • Unused currencies and achievements existed in Borderlands 2, as well as extra dialogue for characters like Lilith and Brick.

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I’ve seen more than my fair share of unused content in games, but the case of Borderlands 2 is one that truly intrigues me. The sheer amount of cut weapons, items, textures, graphics, currencies, achievements, and dialogue that never made it to the final version is astounding!

In many instances, not all concepts or components initially planned for Borderlands 2 ended up in the final product. While the discarded elements weren’t as extensive as those of games like Hogwarts Legacy, particularly its reputation system, there was still a fair amount of unused content lying around in the development process for Borderlands 2.

As a gamer diving into the world of Borderlands 2, I can’t help but notice the remnants of ideas left untouched and features trimmed – from unutilized weapons to pruned textures and dialogues. Yet, somehow, all these cuts didn’t hinder it from becoming the universally acclaimed finest Borderlands game ever crafted.

Everything Cut From Borderlands 2

Several Weapons and Items Went Unused for Borderlands 2

The significant weapons and items initially planned for Borderlands 2, but eventually omitted before its launch, are notable absences in the game, given that the series is famously centered around loot. Among the discarded weapons from Borderlands 2 was the Torgue rocket launcher known as ERROR MESSAGE ERROR MESSAGE, which only Master Gee could utilize; players couldn’t access it. Additionally, the Harpoon Gun and a distinctive Vladof pistol called “Fire Drill,” capable of guaranteeing an Ignite effect, were also left out of the final version of the game.

In the development phase before its launch, several items from the game Borderlands 2 were eliminated, such as a Legendary Bandit Grenade and an early Eridian Relic known as The Mystery of Tannis. This relic would have amplified Explosive Damage by a specific percentage if it had been included in the base game. Similarly, Wisp Jars were also removed from Borderlands 2 prior to release, although some players have claimed to find them in the past. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that these items served no purpose. Lastly, the power-up “Turtle Up!” was initially designed to drop health from enemies but ended up unused throughout the game.

The Turtle Up! power up was intended to temporarily raise core stats and prevent damage.

Some Textures and Graphics Were Cut From Borderlands 2

In the process of creating Borderlands 2, like many games, there were textures and graphics designed but left out before the final release. One of these overlooked details is a texture for the inside of the mine shaft’s crusher in Caustic Caverns that never made it into the game. Interestingly, two other missing textures can still be spotted in the game; they appear as the standard Unreal Development Kit checkerboard pattern. You can catch a glimpse of one of these textures by peering through the grating in Washburne Refinery, and another can be discovered by exploiting a glitch and navigating beyond the map boundaries in The Rustyards.

In the game “Borderlands 2”, some unused graphics suggest that certain items were initially planned but later removed. For instance, there’s no Slag Nova Shield or Slag Spike Shield in “Borderlands 2”, however, the presence of missing graphics implies they might have been part of the original game. Furthermore, despite Atlas Corporation vanishing after “Borderlands”, their logo was intended to be featured somewhere in “Borderlands 2”. Lastly, it’s interesting to note that the Unreal Editor splash screen graphic is included with the PC files for the Epic Games version of “Borderlands 2”.

Borderlands 2’s Final Release Had Numerous Unused Currencies

In the game “Borderlands 2”, several currencies remained unused, including some placeholders meant for DLC content that didn’t get implemented. Altogether, there were eight such currencies that had no role in “Borderlands 2”. Unfortunately, we don’t know the names or purposes of these unutilized currencies.

Some Achievements Never Made It to Borderlands 2’s Final Release

It’s worth noting that some achievements for the game “Borderlands 2” didn’t end up being included in the final version of the game. Just as certain currencies were initially placeholders, these achievements don’t have specific names attached to them. In total, a significant number of 40 achievements weren’t utilized in the final release of “Borderlands 2”.

Strings of Miscellaneous Dialogue Were Cut From Borderlands 2

In the game Borderlands 2, some minor dialogue sequences were left out. These included a sound effect for Brick suggesting a powerful punch, an audio clip of Lilith in distress, and an unclear but loud line from Jimbo Hodunk. Furthermore, there were various unused crowd sounds such as boos, expressions of disgust, and comments like “this song is terrible,” “this is awful,” and “turn it off.
